12 41 020 Removing and installing/replacing starter motor (M54)

Observe instructions for disconnecting and connecting battery. Refer to 12 00... Instructions for disconnecting and connecting battery .

Disconnect battery negative lead from battery.

Unlock plug (1) from pulse generator for crankshaft and detach. See Fig 1.

NOTE: For a better overview, this work step is shown on an engine that has been removed.

Release nut (1) and disconnect battery positive leads from starter motor. See Fig 2.

Installation:

Tightening torque. Refer to ENGINE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM - TIGHTENING TORQUE .

Release nuts (1).

Installation:

Tightening torque. Refer to ENGINE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM - TIGHTENING TORQUE .

Detach leads (2) from starter motor. See Fig 3.

Releasing both starter motor mounting bolts (1) on transmission. See Fig 4.

Release starter mounting bolts from transmission output end with a long extension and a universal joint.

Installation:

Tightening torque. Refer to ENGINE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM - TIGHTENING TORQUE .

Pull starter motor (1) out of transmission flange and remove towards bottom. See Fig 5.

Installation:

Check starter motor pinion and ring gear for damage. See Fig 6.
