Swivel Bearing: Removal

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 7 other vehicles, including the 2006 BMW X5, 2005 BMW X5, 2004 BMW X5, 2003 BMW X5, and 2002 BMW X5. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Remove wheel.
  2. Operate brake and release collar nut on axle shaft. See Fig 1.
  3. Remove brake disc and ABS pulse sensor. See appropriate article in BRAKES.
  4. Unfasten nut and press off tie rod with special tool (32 3 090). See Figure.
    5. CAUTION: If guide joint has been driven out with special tool, it must be replaced. See GUIDE JOINT .
  5. Unfasten guide joint screws. See Fig 2. If guide joint is firmly seated in swivel bearing, use special tool (33 4 205. See GUIDE JOINT .
  6. Unfasten control arm nut and press control arm off swivel bearing with special tool (31 2 240). See Figure.
  7. Screw on special tools (33 2 116/117, 33 2 150) with 5 wheel studs (1). Press axle shaft out of drive flange. Grip with tire iron (2). See Fig 3.
  8. Unscrew nuts and remove swivel bearing from spring strut. See Figure.
    9. CAUTION: The wheel bearing is destroyed when the drive flange is removed and must not be reused.
  9. Clamp swivel bearing with aluminum clamping jaws in vise. Secure special tool (33 2 116) and (33 2 150) to drive flange with 5 wheel studs. Drive out drive flange with special tool (33 4 200). See Figure.
  10. If necessary, detach bearing inner race from drive flange with special tool (33 4 400) through groove in bearing inner race. See Fig 4.
  11. Tension special tool (33 4 401) with wrenches (33 4 403/404) until it can still just be turned in groove. Screw in special tool (33 4 402). Detach inner bearing race. See Fig 5.
  12. Remove dust sleeve (1) and brake guard plate (2) and install on new swivel bearing. See Fig 6.
