Front Axle Support: Removal

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 7 other vehicles, including the 2006 BMW X5, 2005 BMW X5, 2004 BMW X5, 2003 BMW X5, and 2002 BMW X5. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Draw power steering fluid out of tank. Do not reuse fluid. Observe all waste disposal regulations. Make sure all parts are absolutely clean. No dirt is allowed to enter the system. Seal off pipe connections with plugs.
  2. Remove front wheels.
  3. Unscrew bolts (1, 2) and remove reinforcement plate. See Fig 1.
  4. Remove engine splash guard.
  5. Lift engine hood into assembly position. With a second person assisting and on both sides, gently raise retaining clip and simultaneously push upwards. Hold engine hood, unhook damper on hood. Open hood fully and reattach damper with special tool (51 2 170) to hood. See Fig 2.
  6. Turn fasteners on acoustic cover 90 degrees counterclockwise and remove acoustic cover.
  7. Release guide tube for oil dipstick on right side of timing case cover. See Fig 3.
    8. NOTE: The supports (1) of special tool (00 0 208) must make contact with the screws on the side walls.
  8. Assemble special tool (00 0 200) with special tool (00 0 201/202/204/208) and install. Attach special tool (11 0 000) to special tool (00 0 200). Only in this way can you ensure that the engine hangs horizontally when the front axle support is released. Only attach engine to relevant suspension lugs. See Fig 4.
  9. Remove engine underguard.
  10. Tighten screws (1, 2). See Fig 5.
  11. Unfasten top left and right nuts on engine mounts.
  12. Raise engine approximately .39-.47" (10-12 mm).
  13. Set steering gear to straight ahead position. Markings on steering spindle and steering gear must be aligned. Remove ignition key in this position. The steering wheel cannot be turned and the slip ring in the steering column switch is not damaged.
  14. Detach clamp from steering gear. See Fig 6.
  15. Unfasten nut and force off steering tie rod on left and right with special tool (32 3 090). See Fig 7.
  16. Remove left and right control arms from front axle support. See Fig 8.
  17. Release nut and remove left and right tension struts from front axle support. See Fig 9.
  18. Unscrew left and right engine mounts from front axle support.
  19. Unfasten nuts for steering gear to front axle support. See Fig 10.
  20. Support front axle support in middle with workshop hoist. Remove screws of front axle support to engine support. See Fig 11.
  21. Lower workshop hoist until banjo bolts on steering gear are accessible. Release banjo bolts and remove front axle support with steering gear. See Fig 12.
