Coil Spring & Shock Absorber: Installation

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 10 other vehicles, including the 2003 BMW 530i, 2003 BMW 525i, 2002 BMW 530i, 2002 BMW 525i, and 2001 BMW 530i. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Place coil spring in spring holders with spring retainer and, if necessary, a new spring pad in spring holder. Ensure positive locking of end of spring, spring pad and spring retainer. End of spring (1) must be flush with end of spring holder (2). See Figure.
  2. Replace auxiliary spring (1) if necessary. Check protective tube (2) and spring pad (3), replace if necessary. Opening on spring plate and spring pad must be flush. See Fig 1.
  3. Insert spring strut shock absorber into coil spring and upper spring plate. Observe installation sequence. See Fig 2.
  4. Replace self-locking nut (1) and screw onto piston rod until it is flush. Coil spring must fit positively in lower spring plate/spring pad. See Fig 3.
  5. Release tension on coil spring until it is fully resting in lower spring plate.
  6. Tighten self-locking nut with special tool (31 2 210). If necessary, grip piston rod. See Figure.
  7. Tighten nut to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  8. Installation is reverse of removal.
  9. Install spring strut shock absorber thrust bearing to wheel arch and tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  10. Press swivel bearing upwards to stop with workshop hoist and note marking of installation position. Replace self-locking nut and tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  11. Tighten steering knuckle nut to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  12. Replace self-locking nut and attach control arm to steering knuckle. Use washer (1). Tapered spigot and bore must be free of grease. See Figure. Tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  13. Replace self-locking nut and attach stabilizer link. Tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  14. Attach ABS and brake wear cables to bracket and connection box. See .ABS/ASC+T/DSC CONTROL MODULE (FROM 09/98)
  15. Attach brake caliper. See CALIPER ASSEMBLY
  16. Install front wheel and tighten wheel lug bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
