Checking Tension Struts
WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 10 other vehicles, including the 2003 BMW 530i, 2003 BMW 525i, 2002 BMW 530i, 2002 BMW 525i, and 2001 BMW 530i. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE:
Removed tension struts with traction strut bearings can also be checked with special tool (31 1 401/402).
- Remove all acoustic insulation from engine compartment.
- Remove cap from traction strut bearing. See Fig 1.
- Tension strut may be with or without date stamp. If stamped (1) is date stamp and (2) is side designation, L for left and R for right. See Fig 2.
- Prepare special tool (31 1 401). On tension strut with date stamp, remove spacer (31 1 402) from special tool (31 1 401). On tension strut without date stamp, attach spacer (31 1 402) to special tool (31 1 401). See Fig 3.
- Position special tool (31 1 401) on traction strut bearing (1) and swing upward until it contacts tension strut. See Fig 4.
- If the control point (1) of the special tool contacts the tension strut, the tension strut is OK. Check left tension strut with tool end L. Check right tension strut with tool end R. See Fig 5.
- Replace defective tension strut. See TENSION STRUTS under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- Insert cap in clip. See Fig 1.
- Install all acoustic insulation.
NOTE:
Bring special tool into contact with tension strut without exerting force or pressure.
