11 31 036 Removing And Installing/Replacing Left Exhaust Camshaft (N73)

Cylinders 7 to 12.

Necessary Preliminary Tasks: 

Remove oil line (1).

Bearing cap (2) of exhaust camshaft, release screws and remove.

Release nuts of bearing caps 7 to 12 in area (3) from outside to inside and set down in order.

IMPORTANT: Cylinder head and bearing cap are matched to each other and must not be mixed up. Risk of damage. 

Remove exhaust camshaft (4).

Installation: 

Tightening torque, refer to 11 31 1AZ in ENGINE - TIGHTENING TORQUES .

IMPORTANT: Plain compression rings (1) can easily break.

Remove and install/replace plain compression rings (1).

Plain compression rings (1) are engaged at joint.

Press compression ring (1) on one side into groove, press upwards from below on other side and remove catch.

Carefully pull compression ring (1) apart and remove towards front.

Installation: 

Install compression rings in reverse sequence to their removal.

Release screw (2) and remove sensor gear (1).

Installation: 

Tightening torque, refer to 11 31 14AZ in ENGINE - TIGHTENING TORQUES .

IMPORTANT: Danger Of Mixing Up Exhaust Camshafts. 
  1. Exhaust camshaft for cylinders 1 to 6 is marked as shown in illustration with AUS 16.
  2. Exhaust camshaft for cylinders 7 to 12 is marked as shown in illustration with AUS 712.

IMPORTANT: Make sure rocker arms (1) are secured as illustrated on hydraulic valve clearance compensating elements and on valves. Used rocker arms may only be reused in the same position.

Check dowel sleeves (2) for damage and correct installation position.

Ends of compression rings point upwards.

Fit bearing cover.

Tighten down nuts of bearing bracket for cylinders 7 to 12 in area (1) from inside to outside.

Fit bearing cap (2) and tighten down.

Installation: 

Make sure bucket tappets of high-pressure pump in bearing cap 5 are in correct installation position.

Installation: 

Tightening torque, refer to 11 31 1AZ in ENGINE - TIGHTENING TORQUES .

Assemble engine in reverse sequence to its disassembly.

Installation: 

Clean all bearings and cams of exhaust camshaft and lubricate with engine oil.
