Removal & Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 BMW Z8, 2002 BMW Z8, 2001 BMW Z8, and 2000 BMW Z8. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Unscrew and remove splash guard. Unfasten nut and remove screw. See Fig 1 .
  2. Unfasten tension strut nut. See Fig 2 .
  3. Press tension strut out of swivel bearing with special tool (31 2 240). See Fig 3 .
  4. Slacken screw connection for spring strut tube/swivel bearing. Pull swivel bearing downwards and remove tension strut.
  5. Installation is reverse of removal. Insure tapered spigot and bore are both free of grease. Use washer (1). See Fig 2 .
  6. Replace self-locking nuts and, if necessary, grip hexagon socket. Tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  7. If the tension struts were replaced, check axle alignment. See appropriate SPECIFICATIONS & PROCEDURES article in WHEEL ALIGNMENT.
