Axle Shafts: Reassembly
WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 49 other vehicles, including the 2003 BMW M5, 2003 BMW 540i, 2003 BMW 530i, 2003 BMW 525i, and 2002 BMW M5. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE:
Use CV joint kit for reassembly.
- Clean grease from axle shaft and components.
- Pack CV joint to top edge with grease supplied in CV joint kit. To ensure uniform lubrication, push in CV joint as far as it will go and then pull out .63" (16 mm). See Fig 1 .
- Pull rubber boot into place and secure with retaining clamp. Securing protrusion on boot clamp on differential side, must be aligned with rivet in flange. See Fig 2 .
- Remove adhesive tape and mount small end of rubber boot on axle.
- Coat sealing surface of cap with sealing gel and press onto CV joint with a thrust ring.
- Pull NEW rubber boot onto CV joint.
- Using special tool (33 2 130), press CV joint and cap over inner bearing race on splined shaft. See Fig 3 .
- Install NEW circlip.
- Pack joint and boot with grease supplied in joint kit.
- Coat large diameter end of boot with an adhesive, and pull boot onto CV cap.
- Install NEW boot retaining clamps.
