Axle Shafts: Disassembly

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 49 other vehicles, including the 2003 BMW M5, 2003 BMW 540i, 2003 BMW 530i, 2003 BMW 525i, and 2002 BMW M5. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Remove sealing cover (1) from end of axle shaft CV joint. See Fig 1 .
Remove CV boot retaining clamp (2), cap (3) and dust cover from axle. Remove circlip (4). See Fig 2 .
Using special tools (21 2 120) and (26 1 110), press splined axle shaft out of CV joint (press on inner bearing race surface only). DO NOT disassemble CV joint. See Fig 3 .
Remove gaiter. Loosen retaining clamps and pull rubber boot off over splined shaft.
Inspect boot for deterioration and cracking, and replace if necessary.
Check bearing assembly for smooth operation. Inspect assembly for abnormal wear, scoring and pitting. Replace as an assembly.
