Axle Carrier Assembly: Removal

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 21 other vehicles, including the 2002 BMW Z3, 2002 BMW M Roadster, 2002 BMW M Coupe, 2001 BMW Z3, and 2001 BMW M Roadster. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove rear wheels.
  2. Disconnect handbrake cables from handbrake lever and pull cables out of guide tubes. See appropriate DISC article in BRAKES.
  3. On Z3, remove console tray and handbrake lever if necessary.
  4. Disconnect drive shaft. See appropriate DRIVE SHAFTS & UNIVERSAL JOINTS article in DRIVE AXLES.
  5. Disconnect speedometer signal plug on differential.
  6. Remove ABS speed sensors.
  7. Disconnect brake pad wear sensor, if necessary.
  8. Unfasten stabilizer on semi-trailing arms.
  9. Disconnect line from carbon canister.
  10. On M Roadster and M Coupe, remove brake calipers. On all other vehicles, install pedal support and actuate brake pedal. This prevents brake fluid from escaping from the brake system when the brake line is disconnected.
  11. Disconnect left and right brake lines. See Fig 1 .
  12. Support axle carrier assembly with special tool (00 2 030/041/042 and 33 3 271/272/273/274/275/303). See Fig 2 .
  13. Unscrew nut (1) and bolts (2) on axle carrier assembly. See Fig 3 .
  14. Slightly raise semi-trailing arm, unfasten screw, remove shock absorber and lower semi-trailing arm slightly. See Fig 4 .
  15. Unscrew screw on differential cover to body. See Fig 5 .
  16. Lower rear axle until coil springs are exposed. Remove coil springs. See Fig 6 .
  17. Remove axle carrier.
