11 31 036 Removing and Installing/Replacing Left Exhaust Camshaft (N63O1)

Special Tools Required: 

• 11 4 480 .

  (Cylinder Bank 5 To 8) 

Necessary Preliminary Tasks: 

• Remove Left HIGH PRESSURE PUMP .
• Remove LEFT CYLINDER HEAD COVER .
• Remove EXHAUST CAMSHAFT ADJUSTER  On Left Side.

Use An Open-End Spanner (1) To Twist Exhaust Camshaft (2) At Mounting Flats Into A Suitable Position.

Release Screws of Camshaft Bearing From Outside Inwards In 1/2 Turns.

Set Down All Bearing Caps In A Tidy and Orderly Fashion On Special Tool 11 4 480 .

Remove Roller Tappet From Bearing Cap (2 and 3) of High Pressure Pump and Set Down On Special Tool 11 4 480 .

Remove Left Exhaust Camshaft and Set Down On Special Tool 11 4 480 .

Align All Rocker Arms (1).

Plastic Rings (1) Are Maintenance-Free and Must Not Be Replaced.

Check Plastic Rings for Damage.

Plastic Plain Rectangular Compression Ring: 

Plain Rectangular Compression Rings Are Preassembled On A New Camshaft.

Plain Rectangular Compression Rings (1) Are Maintenance-Free and Must Only Be Replaced If Damaged.

Insert Plain Rectangular Compression Ring (1) Into Groove of Exhaust Camshaft (2) (See Arrow In Illustration).

Oil Plain Rectangular Compression Ring (1) and Rotate In Direction of Arrow Until Plain Rectangular Compression Ring (1) Is Positioned On Exhaust Camshaft.

Coat All Bearing Positions with Engine Oil.

Insert Exhaust Camshaft (1) with Identification A 58  Towards Top.

Insert All Bolts.

Tighten Screws From Inside Outwards In 1/2 Turns.

Tightening torque: 11 31 6 AZ .

Tightening torque: 11 31 7 AZ .

Insert Tappets for High-Pressure Pump.

Use An Open-End Spanner (1) At Hexagon Head of Camshafts (2) To Position Camshaft.

The Position of The Exhaust Camshaft On Cylinder 8 Is Correct When The Cam Points Downward.

Attach EXHAUST CAMSHAFT ADJUSTER .

Adjust VALVE TIMING .

Assemble Engine.
