11 31 574 Adjusting camshaft timing on right side (N63O1)

Special tools required: 

IMPORTANT: Release central bolts on adjuster only with special tool 2 249 117 .
Risk of damage  to timing drive.

(cylinder bank 1 to 4) 

Necessary preliminary work: 

Get set of special tools 2 249 117 ready for securing camshafts.

Position special tool 2 249 137 on intake camshaft.

Position exhaust camshaft with special tool 2 249 140 and attach to special tool 2 249 137 .

Release central bolts (1 and 2) of intake and exhaust camshaft adjusters.

Installation note: 

Replace central bolts after releasing.

IMPORTANT: Check whether head of central bolt (1) is greased (see arrow).

Installation note: 

Coat contact surface of new central bolt (1) with copper paste.

Insert central bolts (1 and 2).

IMPORTANT: Loosen the central bolts (1 and 2) by maximum 40°.

Remove special tool 11 9 190 .

IMPORTANT: Crank engine back at central bolt through 8°.

Position engine with special tool 11 9 190 in front of special tool 11 8 570 as shown in graphic.

Installation note: 

The tightening sequence begins with the exhaust camshaft.

Insert central bolt (1) of exhaust camshaft with special tool 11 4 350 .

Jointing torque 5 Nm  .

Insert central bolt (1) of intake camshaft with special tool 11 4 350 .

Jointing torque 5 Nm  .

Remove special tool 11 9 190 .

Turn the engine at the central bolt further until the special tool 11 9 190 can be positioned in the gear case cover.

The engine is now in the 150° crankshaft position before the TDC firing position of cylinder 1.

Installation note: 

Tighten central bolts beginning with the exhaust camshaft.

Insert central bolt (1) of exhaust camshaft with torque.

Tightening torque of 30 Nm

Insert central bolt (1) of intake camshaft with torque.

Tightening torque of 30 Nm

Insert central bolt (1) of exhaust camshaft with special tool 00 9 120 .

TORSION ANGLE ADJUSTMENT90°

Insert central bolt (1) of intake camshaft with special tool 00 9 120 .

TORSION ANGLE ADJUSTMENT90° 

Remove special tool 2 249 117 .

Remove special tools 11 9 190 and 11 8 570 .

Crank engine at central bolt twice in direction of engine rotation until engine returns to 150° before cylinder no. 1 firing TDC position  .

Secure vibration damper with special tools 11 8 570 and 11 9 190 in the 150° TDC firing position, cylinder 1  .

Fit special tool 2 249 137 on intake camshaft and check timing adjustment.

NOTE: Timing is correctly adjusted when special tool 2 249 137 rests without a gap on cylinder head.

Place special tool 2 249 140 on the exhaust camshaft and check timing adjustment.

NOTE: Timing is correctly adjusted when special tool 2 249 140 rests without a gap on special tool 2 249 137 .

Remove all special tools.

Assemble engine.
