11 31 038 Removing and installing/renewing right exhaust camshaft (N63O1)

Special tools required: 

• 11 4 480

Cylinders 1-4: 

Necessary preliminary work: 

• Remove right HIGH-PRESSURE PUMP
• Remove right CYLINDER HEAD COVER
• Remove right EXHAUST CAMSHAFT ADJUSTER 

Rotate exhaust camshaft (2) at dihedron with a fork wrench into a suitable position.

Release screws in sequence (10 to 1) in 1/2 turns.

Set all bearing caps down in special tool 11 4 480 in a neat and orderly fashion.

Remove roller tappet from bearing caps (2 and 3) of high pressure pump and lay down in special tool 11 4 480 .

Remove right exhaust camshaft right and place in special tool 11 4 480 .

Plastic rings (1) are maintenance-free and must not be renewed.

Check plastic rings for damage.

Plastic plain rectangular compression ring: 

Plastic plain rectangular compression rings are already pre-installed on a new camshaft.

Plastic plain rectangular compression rings (1) are maintenance-free and must be replaced if damaged.

Insert plastic rectangular compression ring (1) into groove of exhaust camshaft (2) (see arrow in illustration).

Lightly oil plastic rectangular compression ring (1) and rotate in direction of arrow until compression ring (1) is positioned on the exhaust camshaft.

Align all rocker arms (1) straight.

Coat all bearing positions with engine oil.

Insert exhaust camshaft (1) with identification (2) A 14  towards top.

Position all bearing caps by number.

Tighten down bolts in sequence (1 to 10) in 1/2 turns.

Tightening torque 11 31 6AZ .

Tightening torque 11 31 7AZ .

Use an open-end spanner (1) at hexagon head with to twist camshaft (2) into position.

Exhaust cams at cylinder 4 of exhaust camshaft must point inwards crosswise (see Fig 10).

Install right INLET AND EXHAUST CAMSCHAFT ADJUSTERS .

Adjust VALVE TIMING .

Assemble engine.
