12 41 020 Remove and install/replace the starter motor (N63 B40/B44 O 1)

Necessary preliminary tasks:

Switch off ignition.
Disconnect BATTERY NEGATIVE LEAD .
Remove right engine support arm. See 22 11 100 REPLACING RIGHT ENGINE SUPPORT ARM (N63) or 22 11 100 REPLACING RIGHT ENGINE SUPPORT ARM (N63) 4WD .

Release screws (1).

Tightening torque 12 41 1AZ .

Unlock connector (1) and remove.

Slacken nut (2).

Tightening torque 12 42 2AZ .

Disconnect positive battery cable.

Release screws (3) and detach cable clip from starter motor.

Remove starter motor (4) in direction of travel.

Installation note:

Check starter pinion and starter ring gear for damage. If necessary, replace damaged components.

Reassemble the vehicle.

Only during starter replacement and on vehicles with MSA (automatic engine start-stop function):

Use BMW diagnosis system to reset the starter counter.
