51 71 215 Replacing seal on left or right rear door

Necessary preliminary tasks:

Remove COVER ON INSIDE DOOR WINDOW FRAME
Detach DOOR BRAKE ON DOOR PILLAR

NOTE: The positioning of the seal must be performed at two points on the rear door with positioning aids to be stuck on.
Positioning aids are included with new seals.

Position of seal (3) on rear door

Area (A) at distance (D) to door rabbet.

Area (B) at line (A) to positioning aids (2) to be stuck on.

Area (C): Point C1 "Lock" at distance (E) acc. to cutaway view.

Area (C): Point C2 "Cap" at distance (F) acc. to cutaway view.

Area (C): Point C3 "Sill" at distance (G) acc. to cutaway view.

D = 1.5 mm E = 6 mm
F = 9 mm G = 19 mm

Clean bonding surfaces on paint with adhesive cleaner (sourcing reference: BMW Parts Department).

Detach prestamped positioning aid from backing.

Positioning aid "C1" rear door, left (door brake, top)
Positioning aid "D1" rear door, right (door brake, top)

Align positioning aid with printed help markings (X), bores and contact edge (B) to rear door and press.

Seal must rest on positioning edge (A) during sticking.

Detach prestamped positioning aid from backing.

Align positioning aid with printed help marking (X), bores and contact edge (B) to rear door and press.

Seal must rest on positioning edge (A) during sticking.

X = Start of bend radius

IMPORTANT:

Do not grip bonding surface.
It is not the time of the pressure, but rather the level of pressure (approx. 10... 15 N/cm² ) that is decisive.
Separation of seal after pressing destroys the adhesive layer.

NOTE: After being pressed on gently, seal can be pulled off again up to 3 times. Do not dirty adhesive area.

Clean bonding surfaces on paint with adhesive cleaner (sourcing reference: BMW Parts Department).

Suspend seal (1) with open lip pointing inwards over door.

IMPORTANT: Contact point of seal must be situated on underside of door after gluing.

Glue seal as follows:

Position seal with marking in accordance with overview below on B - and C-pillars.
Pull protective film (liner) off seal in stages.
Gently press seal without stretching up to start of positioning aids.
Check positioning of seal, correct if necessary (sag max. 30 mm).
Firmly press seal vertically onto bonding surface.
Pull remaining protective film (liner) off seal.
Press remaining seal without stretching.
Check positioning of seal, correct if necessary and firmly press.

Remove positioning aids and assemble front door.
