12 42 500 Removing and installing or replacing battery positive lead (between starter motor, alternator and battery positive support point) (M62)

Interrogate fault memory of DME control unit.

Switch off ignition.

Disconnect battery negative lead from battery.

Observe safety instructions for handling vehicle battery.

NOTE: Follow instructions for disconnecting and connecting battery, refer to 12 00... INSTRUCTIONS FOR DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING BATTERY  .

Disconnect negative battery lead.

Remove reinforcement plate.

CAUTION: The work step "Removing and installing reinforcement plate" contains important installation instructions,
refer to 31 10 010 FRONT AXLE .

Release screws.

Remove underbody paneling (1).

Remove protective cap (1) of battery positive lead from starter motor.

Release nut (2).

Tightening torque, refer to 12 41 4AZ in ENGINE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM - TIGHTENING TORQUES - X5 4.6L .

Disconnect battery positive lead from starter motor.

Unclip battery positive lead from holders.

Unclip battery positive lead from holders (1) on upper oil sump section.

Release nut (1).

Disconnect battery positive lead (2) from alternator. Tightening torque, refer to 12 31 1AZ in ENGINE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM - TIGHTENING TORQUES - X5 4.6L .

Turn fasteners on acoustic cover 90° counterclockwise.

Remove acoustic cover.

Release cable ties (1).

Remove sealing caps on cover of ignition coils on left.

Release nuts.

Remove cover on ignition coils on left.

Installation: 

Check profile seal (1) for damage and correct seating, replace if necessary.

Release nut.

Fold down protective cap (1).

Release nut (2).

Tightening torque, refer to 12 51 4AZ in ENGINE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM - TIGHTENING TORQUES - X5 4.6L

Remove battery positive lead from positive support point for jump starting.

NOTE: Interrogate fault memory of DME control unit.
Check stored fault messages.
Rectify faults.
Now clear the fault memory.
