61 31 342 Removing and installing/replacing the gear selector switch (GWS)

Special tools required: 

IMPORTANT: Read and comply with notes on protection against electrostatic damage (ESD PROTECTION) .

Necessary preliminary tasks 

Release screws (1).

Tightening torque 61 31 1 AZ .

Remove gear selector switch (2) from center console (3) and unlock and disconnect plug connection underneath.

Installation note: 

Align gear selector switch (2) centrally.

Replacement: 

Carry out VEHICLE PROGRAMMING/ENCODING .

Replacement: 

NOTE: A new connector with deviating pin assignment will be installed in the following vehicles.
  • F25 from 03/2011
  • F01, F02, F03, F04, F07 from 09/2011
  • F10, F11, F12, F13, F18 from 03/2012

On the above-mentioned vehicles which were produced before  the relevant data the wiring harness must if necessary be reconnected from the previous 8-pin connector to a new 10-pin connector (BMW Parts Department 9 132 577) with special tool 61 0 313 .

Pin assignment:

Eight-pin connector: current pin Ten-pin connector: new pin
