Necessary preliminary tasks

• Clamp off battery. See 61 20 900 DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING BATTERY NEGATIVE LEAD
• Remove reinforcement plate. See 31 10 010 REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING REINFORCEMENT PLATE .
• Remove exhaust system after catalytic converter. See 18 00 020 REMOVING AND INSTALLING COMPLETE EXHAUST SYSTEM (CONV.) or 18 00 020 REMOVING AND INSTALLING COMPLETE EXHAUST SYSTEM (COUPE) .
• Remove oxygen sensors. See 11 78 540 REPLACING LEFT OXYGEN MONITOR SENSOR (N62 / N62TU) or 11 78 543 REPLACING RIGHT OXYGEN MONITOR SENSOR (N62/N62TU) .
• Support engine with lifter

Remove heat shields (1) and (2).

Detach plug (1) from reversing light switch.

Release cable from retainers.

Pull plug (1) off pulse generator.

Release screw (2) and remove pulse generator.

Detach plug (1) from oil level sensor and unclip cable from fixtures.

Detach plug (1) from cable duct.

Press in retaining lugs (1) with screwdriver (2) and remove cable duct (3).

Tie wiring harness to one side.

Release screws (1).

Tightening torque 23 00 1AZ .
