31 12 075 Checking both tension struts

Remove all acoustic insulation from engine compartment.

Remove cap from traction strut bearing.

Installation note: 

Insert cap in clip.

NOTE:

Note the markings on the tension strut.

1 = Date stamp

2 = Side designation L = left; R = right

Different tension struts may be fitted.

A: Tension strut with date stamp (1)

B: Tension strut without date stamp

Prepare special tool 31 1 401.

A: Tension strut with date stamp

Remove spacer 31 1 402 from special tool 31 1 401.

B: Tension strut without date stamp

Attach spacer 31 1 402 to special tool 31 1 401.

Spacer 31 1 402 must be attached to tension struts which do not have date stamps.

Position special tool 31 1 401 on traction strut bearing (1) and swing upward until it contacts tension strut.

CAUTION: Bring special tool into contact with tension strut without exerting force or pressure.

If the control point (1) of the special tool contacts the tension strut, the tension strut is O.K.

Check left tension strut with tool end L.

Check right tension strut with tool end R.

Replace defective tension strut

NOTE: Removed tension struts with traction strut bearings can also be checked with special tool 31 1 401/402.
