11 13 010 Removing and installing/replacing upper oil sump section (S62)

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 BMW Z8, 2002 BMW Z8, 2001 BMW Z8, and 2000 BMW Z8. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Special tools required: 

NOTE: To remove the upper oil sump section, the front axle support must be lowered.
There is no need to perform a front axle alignment check.

Lift engine hood into assembly position.

Open cap (1), draw off hydraulic fluid from supply reservoir for power steering pump. Dispose of hydraulic fluid.

Observe country-specific waste-disposal regulations.

Refit cap (1).

Detach supply reservoir from carrier.

NOTE: Lines remain connected.

Remove upper section of intake filter housing (2) with air-mass flow sensor.

Open main flow oil filter cover.

Engine oil flows out of the oil filter housing and back into the oil pan.

Disconnect plug (1). Disconnect cable from holder (2).

NOTE: Oil lines of main flow oil filter are secured with two clamps to holder (2).
Holder (2) is not screwed to engine carrier but rather secured with two pins.

Remove holder (2).

Release nuts on engine mounts on left and right.

CAUTION: Risk of damage.

Engine must "not" be supported on side walls.

When oil sump is removed, engine must be supported on engine carrier.

CAUTION: Risk of damage.

It is very easy for paint damage to occur when special tool 00 0 200 is attached.

Protect spring strut domes against paint damage.

Assemble special tool 00 0 200 with special tool 00 0 201 / 00 0 202 / 00 0 204 / 00 0 206.

CAUTION: Risk of damage. Do not damage lines, cables or hoses.

Contact faces of special tool 00 0 206 must rest on engine carrier.

Unscrew and remove splash guard.

Drain coolant.

Remove coolant hose (1).

CAUTION: Suspend engine only from suspension lugs at front and rear designed for this purpose.

Suspend engine at front and rear from special tool 11 0 260.

Raise engine with special tool 00 0 200 approx. 6 to 8 mm.

Detach universal joint from steering gear. Refer to STEERING SPINDLE .

Support front axle support with special tool 00 2 030 in conjunction with special tool 31 2 220.

Detach stabilizer bar from front axle support.

Detach front axle support from engine carrier and lower approx. 100 mm.

Removal and installation instructions are described in the work step Replacing front axle support. Refer to FRONT SUSPENSION ASSEMBLY .

Removal 

Removal of upper oil sump section is described separately from installation.

NOTE: Upper oil sump section can be removed and installed with installed oil pump.

Open oil drain plug and drain off engine oil.

Remove lower oil sump section.

Pretension belt tensioner and remove A/C compressor drive belt from belt pulleys.

Detach belt tensioner from upper oil sump section.

Detach oil dipstick guide tube from cylinder head and from upper oil sump section.

Remove oil dipstick guide tube.

Installation: 

Replace O-ring.

Insert O-ring and washer in oil sump bore.

Detach return line from upper oil sump section.

NOTE: The upper oil sump section and the cover (1) are machined together and must not be replaced individually.
CAUTION: A residual amount of oil emerges when cover (1) is detached.
Have a container and cloth ready.

Remove cover (1).

Release hexagon nut (1).

Remove oil pump sprocket together with chain from oil pump shaft.

Feed out oil pump sprocket.

CAUTION: A residual amount of oil emerges when the plug (1) is removed.
Have a container and cloth ready.

Open plug (1) on unrefined oil line.

NOTE: Removing the unrefined oil line (1) makes it significantly easier to feed out the upper oil sump section.
If the O-rings are stuck fast in such a way that the unrefined oil line (1) cannot be disconnected:
Disconnect unrefined oil line (1) after removing upper oil sump section.

Pull out unrefined oil line (1).

Disconnect oil lines (1).

Remove baffle plate (2).

Unfasten screws inside oil sump.

Release screws for end cover.

CAUTION: Oil line (1) is screwed to upper oil sump section.

Release remaining screws in upper oil sump section.

Pull upper oil sump section downwards at an angle until oil line (1) is no longer secured in bore (2).

Remove upper oil sump section.

If upper oil sump section has to be replaced:

Convert or replace following components:

Replace all seals and O-rings.

If necessary, remove drive shaft:

Grip at dihedral section (1) of drive shaft and release at hexagon section (2).

Installation: 

Tightening torque for drive shaft 50 Nm.

If necessary, remove snorkel and oil pump:

Detach snorkels (1).

Installation: 

Replace O-ring on snorkel (1).

Remove oil pump (2).

Installation: 

Check dowel sleeves for damage and correct installation position.

NOTE: The governing line (1) may be very slightly bent when the upper oil sump section is removed.

Check governing line (1), replace if necessary.

Installation: 

Replace O-ring on governing line (1).

Check chain tightener (2) of oil pump chain, replace if necessary.

Installation 

Installation of upper oil sump section is described separately from removal.

CAUTION: Groove (1) must be free of dirt and sealing compound.
Condensate from the intake air manifold and oil from the VANOS adjustment unit is routed back to the oil sump through the groove (1).

Sealing faces clean and free of seal debris.

At contact edges between engine block and timing case cover, apply a thin bead of sealing compound Drei Bond 1209 (refer to BMW Parts Service ).

At contact edges between engine block and end cover, apply a thin bead of sealing compound Drei Bond 1209 (refer to BMW Parts Service .

Replace oil sump gasket.

CAUTION: The governing line (1) may be very slightly bent when the upper oil sump section is installed.

Feed in upper oil sump section at an angle until oil line (1) can be joined in bore (2).

  1. Install upper oil sump section
  2. Insert all screws in upper oil sump section.
  3. Insert screws in transmission end without preload at this stage.
  4. Tighten down screws in engine end.
  5. Tighten down screws in transmission end.

Insert screws inside oil sump and tighten down.

Replace O-rings on oil pipes.

CAUTION: Risk of mixing up parts.

The seals (1) for the left and right oil pipes are the same but the direction of installation is different.

The outside and inside contours of the seal (1) must match the oil pipe exactly.

Install baffle plate (2).

Connect oil lines (1).

CAUTION: O-rings (1 and 2) have different diameters.

Replace O-rings (1 and 2) and lubricate slightly.

Connect unrefined oil line (1).

Replace sealing ring.

Install plug (1) in unrefined oil line and tighten down.

Tightening torque 50 Nm.

Push oil pump sprocket together with chain onto oil pump shaft.

Rotate oil pump shaft until oil pump sprocket snaps audibly into place.

Tighten down hexagon nut (1).

Check dowel sleeves (1) for damage and correct installation position.

CAUTION: Condensate from the intake air manifold and oil from the VANOS adjustment unit is routed back to the oil sump through the return bore (2).

If necessary, check throughflow of return bore (2) with compressed air.

Keep sealing face clean and free of oil.

Replace gasket (1).

CAUTION: There must be no sealing compound applied in area of return bore (2).

At contact edges between oil sump gasket and seal (1), apply a thin bead of sealing compound Drei Bond 1209 (refer to BMW Parts Service ).

Install cover (1).

Assemble engine.
