18 12 050 Replacing left or right centre silencer (N63)

Special tools required:

31 2 220 . See FRONT AXLE - SPECIAL TOOLS .

WARNING: Scalding hazard!
Only perform this work after engine has cooled down.
Danger of injury!
Removal of the exhaust system must be carried out with the assistance of a second person.

Support centre silencer with special tool 31 2 220 and a suitable universal lifter.

NOTE: If the separation point is not marked by a punch mark on the pipe, determine the separation point by means of the pipe length on the new centre silencer.

Carry over separation point to faulty centre silencer (1) or (2) and mark out. Secure centre silencer against falling off. Cut through exhaust pipes at marked point with a suitable tool.

Picture shows the left side, the procedure for the right side is identical. Unscrew nuts (1). Tightening torque 18 31 1AZ. Replace self-locking nuts and seals.

Only if the right-hand centre silencer is replaced. Release screws (1). Tightening torque 18 20 1AZ . Lower and remove right-hand centre silencer with assistance of a second person.

Only if the left-hand centre silencer is replaced. Release screws (1). Tightening torque 18 20 1AZ . Lower and remove left-hand centre silencer with assistance of a second person.

Installation note: Adjust centre silencer to fit and connect with clamps. Centre clamp and tighten down. Tightening torque 18 31 5AZ.

The procedure is identical on both sides.
