18 12 031 Replacing rear silencer (N63)

Special tools required: 

• 31 2 220  . See FRONT AXLE - SPECIAL TOOLS .

Necessary preliminary tasks: 

• Remove rear bumper trim  . See 51 12 156 REMOVING AND INSTALLING REAR BUMPER TRIM .

Support exhaust system with special tool 31 2 220.

Carry over separation point to faulty rear silencer (3) and mark out. Secure rear silencer against falling off. Cut through exhaust pipes at marked point with a suitable tool.

Picture shows the left side, the procedure for the right side is identical. Release screw (1). Tightening torque 18 20 3AZ.

Picture shows the left side, the procedure for the right side is identical. Unscrew nuts (1). Tightening torque 18 20 4AZ. . Detach hose (2) from vacuum unit and release at clamp (3). Lower and remove rear silencer with assistance of a second person.

Installation note: 

Install, adjust new rear silencer and connect with hose clamp. Centre clamp and tighten down. Tightening torque 18 31 5AZ . The procedure is identical on both sides.

Installation note:  Align both exhaust tailpipes (1) of rear silencer in each case centrally to recesses in rear apron.
