Removal & Installation

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 6 other vehicles, including the 2005 BMW 545i, 2005 BMW 530i, 2005 BMW 525i, 2004 BMW 545i, and 2004 BMW 530i. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Apply parking brake On models with automatic transmission, move selector lever to "N" position. On models with manual transmission, engage neutral. To be able to remove the preselector lever trim, it is not absolutely necessary to remove the selector lever knob (1). However, removing it does make it easier to remove the preselector lever trim. Do not shear off turning lock of selector lever knob (1). Therefore do not twist selector lever knob (1) when removing. Pull off selector lever knob (1) with a forceful jerk. Press sides of selector lever cover (2) together and feed out towards top. Unclip trim for preselector lever (4) with special tool (009341) from mounting points (3). Disconnect associated plug connections and remove trim for preselector lever (4) towards top. See Fig 1 .

During installation, make sure retainers (1) are correctly seated in appropriate mounts of trim for preselector lever (2). See Fig 2 .

Detach knob for iDrive controller (1) in direction of arrow.

During installation, fit knob for iDrive controller (1) so that guides (2) are seated in mountings (3). Press knob for controller (1) in middle until it engages. See Fig 4 .

Unclip button unit (1) with special tool (009341) at retaining points (2) and lever out in direction of arrow. Unlock and disconnect associated plug connection, remove button unit (1). See Fig 5 .

It necessary, remove ashtray insert. Release screws (1) on storage tray (3). Open center console cover. Press release button for center console cover and lever out finisher (2) for storage tray at rear. Pull off finisher (2) towards rear. See Fig 6 . If necessary, disconnect plug connections on insert at front.

During installation, following parts of finisher for storage tray (4) must not be damaged or missing: front insert (1), retaining lugs (2) or guide (3). See Fig 7 .

Unclip rear insert (1) with special tool no (009341) at retaining points (2) and pull back in direction of arrow. Disconnect associated plug connections and remove rear insert (1). See Fig 8 .

Detach clips (1) in direction of arrow. Remove rear compartment fresh-air grill (2) in direction of arrow and unlock plug connection (3) underneath. See Fig 9 . During installation, make sure rear compartment fresh-air grill (2) and clips (1) are correctly seated.

Lever out trims (1) on left/right at rear end and pull out in direction of arrow. See Fig 10 .

During installation, retainers (1) and guide (2) on trim (3) must not be damaged or missing. See Fig 11 .

Release screws (1) on storage compartment (2). See Fig 12 . If necessary, unlock plug connections.

Release hand brake lever gaiter on storage compartment (2). Release screw (1) on left and right. Lift storage compartment (2) at rear. Feed through hand brake lever gaiter towards bottom and unlock plug connections below storage compartment (2). Feed out storage compartment (2) in direction of arrow over hand brake lever and remove towards rear. See Fig 13 .

During installation, do not damage guides (2) when feeding in storage compartment (1). See Fig 14 .
