24 00 023 Removing and installing automatic transmission (6HP26Z/ N62, N62TU)
Special tools required:
- 00 2 030 . See MAINTENANCE AND GENERAL INFORMATION - SPECIAL TOOLS .
- 23 4 050 See MANUAL TRANSMISSION - SPECIAL TOOLS .
- 24 1 110 See AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION - SPECIAL TOOLS .
- 24 2 390
- 24 4 160
- 24 4 161
- 24 4 165
Use only the approved transmission fluid . See AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION - OPERATING FLUIDS .
Failure to comply with this requirement will result in serious damage to the automatic transmission!
Consequence:
With ignition on and selector lever in N position, the P position (transmission parking brake) is automatically engaged after 30 mins.
This can be prevented by manually unlocking the transmission interlock .
Failure to comply with this instruction will result in immediate transmission damage.
Necessary preliminary tasks:
- Disconnect battery
- Remove reinforcement plate
Important notes on installation are described in this work step
- Remove exhaust system after catalytic converter. See EXHAUST SYSTEM .
- Remove oxygen sensors . See 11 78 540 REPLACING LEFT OXYGEN MONITOR SENSOR (N62 / N62TU) and 11 78 543 REPLACING RIGHT OXYGEN MONITOR SENSOR (N62/N62TU) .
- Support engine
Remove heat shields (1) and (2).
Detach plug (1) from speed sensor.
Release screw (2) and remove speed sensor.
Detach plug (1) from oil level sensor and unclip cable from fixtures.
Detach plug (1) and unclip cable duct (2) from transmission housing.
Tie wiring harness to one side.
Grip clamping sleeve (1).
Slacken nut (2).
Detach retainer (3) towards bottom using a screwdriver.
Pull cable (4) out of holder.
Installation:
Adjust selector lever
Unfasten nut.
Disconnect cable (1).
Installation:
Unfasten nut.
Adjust nut via cable (2) until spacing A=1 mm is obtained.
Tighten nut.
Supporting transmission:
Support transmission with special tools 23 4 050, 00 2 030 .
Secure transmission to mounting with tensioning strap (1).
Tasks are described in Transmission bracket.
After completion of work, check transmission oil level .
If necessary, release nut (1) and remove grounding strap.
Release screws (1) and nuts (2) and remove transmission cross-member. See 22 32 001 REPLACING RUBBER MOUNT FOR TRANSMISSION MOUNTING .
Tightening torque 22 32 3AZ/4AZ . See ENGINE AND GEARBOX SUSPENSION (MOUNTS) - TIGHTENING TORQUES .

- Remove propeller shaft from transmission. See PROPELLER SHAFT .
- Release center bearing.
- Tie propeller shaft to one side.
Tasks are described in PROPELLER SHAFT .
- Unlock and disconnect plug (1) by turning.
- Release cable from retainers.
- Insert special tool 24 2 390 in sealing sleeve.
These tasks are described in Notes on mechatronics .
(Important: Observe important note)
Release screw (1).
Disconnect hydraulic lines (2) to transmission fluid cooler.
Installation:
Replace sealing rings.
Crank engine at vibration damper in direction of rotation until screw is visible in opening.
Release all screws of torque converter with special tool 24 1 110 .
Crank engine further and release remaining 3 bolts.
Tightening torque 24 40 1AZ . See AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION - TIGHTENING TORQUES .
Prepare special tool (1) 24 4 161 with shaped piece (2) 24 4 165 .
Illustration similar.
Insert special tool 24 4 160 into opening of transmission housing and clamp gently with screw (1).
Twist in screw (2) and clamp down.
Then tighten down screw (1).
Release screws.
Tightening torque, 24 00 1AZ . See AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION - TIGHTENING TORQUES .
Installation:
Bore (1) in driving disk must be accessible from opening on engine oil pan.
Check that dowel sleeves are correctly seated.
Replace damaged dowel sleeves.
Installation:
Rotate torque converter until bore in torque converter is flush with bore in driving disc.
Flange automatic transmission to engine.
