24 00 023 Removing and installing automatic transmission (6HP26Z/ N62, N62TU)

Special tools required: 

IMPORTANT: After completion of work, check transmission oil level   .
Use only the approved transmission fluid  . See AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION - OPERATING FLUIDS .
Failure to comply with this requirement will result in serious damage to the automatic transmission!
IMPORTANT: E60/E61 from 03/07 and E63/E64 from 09/07 vehicles have an Auto-P function.
Consequence: 
With ignition on and selector lever in N position, the P position (transmission parking brake) is automatically engaged after 30 mins.
This can be prevented by manually unlocking the transmission interlock  .
WARNING: Car must not be moved when the transmission interlock is engaged.
Failure to comply with this instruction will result in immediate transmission damage.

Necessary preliminary tasks: 

Remove heat shields (1) and (2).

Detach plug (1) from speed sensor.

Release screw (2) and remove speed sensor.

Detach plug (1) from oil level sensor and unclip cable from fixtures.

Detach plug (1) and unclip cable duct (2) from transmission housing.

Tie wiring harness to one side.

NOTE: Version 1 

Grip clamping sleeve (1).

Slacken nut (2).

Detach retainer (3) towards bottom using a screwdriver.

Pull cable (4) out of holder.

Installation: 

Adjust selector lever

NOTE: Version 2 

Unfasten nut.

Disconnect cable (1).

Installation: 

Unfasten nut.

Adjust nut via cable (2) until spacing A=1 mm is obtained.

Tighten nut.

Supporting transmission: 

Support transmission with special tools 23 4 050, 00 2 030  .

Secure transmission to mounting with tensioning strap (1).

Tasks are described in Transmission bracket.

After completion of work, check transmission oil level .

If necessary, release nut (1) and remove grounding strap.

Release screws (1) and nuts (2) and remove transmission cross-member. See 22 32 001 REPLACING RUBBER MOUNT FOR TRANSMISSION MOUNTING .

Tightening torque 22 32 3AZ/4AZ  . See ENGINE AND GEARBOX SUSPENSION (MOUNTS) - TIGHTENING TORQUES .

Release screw (1).

Disconnect hydraulic lines (2) to transmission fluid cooler.

Installation: 

Replace sealing rings.

Crank engine at vibration damper in direction of rotation until screw is visible in opening.

Release all screws of torque converter with special tool 24 1 110  .

Crank engine further and release remaining 3 bolts.

Tightening torque 24 40 1AZ  . See AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION - TIGHTENING TORQUES .

Prepare special tool (1) 24 4 161  with shaped piece (2) 24 4 165  .

Insert special tool 24 4 160  into opening of transmission housing and clamp gently with screw (1).

Twist in screw (2) and clamp down.

Then tighten down screw (1).

Release screws.

Tightening torque, 24 00 1AZ  . See AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION - TIGHTENING TORQUES .

Installation: 

Bore (1) in driving disk must be accessible from opening on engine oil pan.

Check that dowel sleeves are correctly seated.

Replace damaged dowel sleeves.

Installation: 

Rotate torque converter until bore in torque converter is flush with bore in driving disc.

Flange automatic transmission to engine.
