Removal & Installation
WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 14 other vehicles, including the 2005 BMW M3, 2005 BMW 330xi, 2005 BMW 330i, 2005 BMW 330Ci, and 2005 BMW 325xi. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Before proceeding, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS . Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Air bag control unit is located under center console (storage tray).
- Press roller cover down, which will push storage tray up a little. Remove shelf or ashtray toward top. Remove screws and shelf or ashtray bracket. Disconnect harness connector if necessary. Remove 2 screws securing rear of center console and rear insert to floor, detach 4 catches and remove rear insert.
- Unclip hand brake lever boot. On models without armrest, lift up on rear on center console and remove toward rear of vehicle. On models with armrest, unclip gearshift lever boot. Remove 2 screws, raise up on trim and remove center console toward rear of vehicle.
- On all models, cut carpet along premarked line. See Fig 1. Remove 3 nuts and pull air bag control unit up exposing connector. Disconnect air bag control unit harness connector and remove control unit from vehicle.
- To install, reverse removal procedure. Ensure arrow on top of air bag control unit points toward front of vehicle. Tighten air bag control unit mounting nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Perform appropriate coding/programming using proprietary BMW DIS tester as necessary. Activate air bag system. See ACTIVATING SYSTEM under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM.
