Manual Transmission: Removal

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 10 other vehicles, including the 2003 BMW 530i, 2003 BMW 525i, 2002 BMW 530i, 2002 BMW 525i, and 2001 BMW 530i. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Disconnect battery. See INSTRUCTIONS FOR DISCONNECTING & CONNECTING BATTERY. Remove exhaust system. See REMOVING AND INSTALLING COMPLETE EXHAUST SYSTEM (M52) article.
  2. Unflange propeller shaft from transmission and tie back to one side. See REMOVING AND INSTALLING COMPLETE PROPELLER SHAFT article.
  3. Remove bracket for transmission underbody protection (1,2) and heat shield (3). See Fig 1 .
  4. Detach cable plug (1) from reverse gear switch. See Fig 2 . Detach cable from fixtures.
    5. CAUTION: Pressure line remains connected. Slowly relieve tension on clutch slave cylinder during removal as otherwise air will be drawn in through sealing sleeve.
  5. Release nuts and remove clutch slave cylinder. See Fig 3 .
  6. Remove stabilizer links from stabilizer bar. See STABILIZER BAR . Swivel stabilizer bar upwards.
  7. Support transmission with a workshop hoist. See Fig 4 . Release screws and remove cross-member.
  8. Insert Special Tool (11 7 370) between engine oil sump and front axle support. See Fig 5 . Lower transmission.
  9. Support engine at front with a workshop hoist. See Fig 6 .
  10. Lift out retainer (4). See Fig 7 . Pull selector rod out of joint and remove washers (5).
  11. Remove retaining clip with a screwdriver. See Fig 8 .
  12. Withdraw bearing pin and remove selector arm. See Fig 9 .
    13. CAUTION: Do not allow the transmission to hang off from the transmission input shaft as this will deform the clutch plate.
  13. Support transmission with a workshop hoist. Release screws (10 x). See Fig 10 . Pull out transmission towards rear and remove.
