Removal & Installation: Removal

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 6 other vehicles, including the 2003 BMW 530i, 2003 BMW 525i, 2002 BMW 530i, 2002 BMW 525i, and 2001 BMW 530i. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Disconnect battery. See INSTRUCTIONS FOR DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING BATTERY.
  2. Remove complete exhaust system. See REMOVING AND INSTALLING COMPLETE EXHAUST SYSTEM (M54) article..
  3. If necessary, remove assembly underguard at front. Remove first heat shield (1). See Fig 1 .
  4. Remove second heat shield (1). See Fig 2 .
  5. Remove stabilizer links from stabilizer. See STABILIZER BAR . Swivel stabilizer upwards.
  6. Grip clamp bushing (1) of selector lever. See Fig 3 . Loosen nut (2).
  7. Grip Bowden cable (1) at hexagon (2). Unfasten nut (3). Remove cable (1) from bracket. See Fig 4 .
  8. Support transmission with Special Tools (00 2 030 / 24 5 301 / 24 5 304). See Fig 5 .
  9. Remove screws. Remove cross-member (1). See Fig 6 . If necessary, unscrew exhaust suspension on transmission.
  10. Remove screws of flexible disk-to-propeller shaft and transmission output flange. See Fig 7 .
  11. Grip propeller shaft. Remove nuts. Bend propeller shaft downwards at center mount (1). See Fig 8 . Detach propeller shaft from transmission output flange and tie back to side on vehicle underbody.
  12. Fit Special Tool (11 7 370) between engine oil sump and front axle support. It is important to locate special tool in such a position that engine oil sump rests securely on special tool. See Fig 9 .
  13. Support engine at front with a workshop hoist. See Fig 10 .
  14. Unlock and remove cable plug (1). See Fig 11 .
  15. Unlock and remove cable connector (1). See Fig 12 . Unclip cable from transmission case.
  16. Remove screw. Remove hydraulic lines to oil cooler from mounting. See Fig 13 .
  17. Remove screw. Remove hydraulic lines (1, 2) from transmission housing. See Fig 14 .
  18. Remove cover. See Fig 15 .
  19. Unfasten retaining screws on torque converter (3 screws) with Special Tool (24 1 110). See Fig 16 .
  20. Protect torque converter from slipping out. To do so, insert Special Tool (24 4 131 / 24 4 134) in opening of transmission housing. See Fig 17 . Clamp torque converter in place.
  21. Release screws. See Fig 18 . Pull off transmission from engine towards rear and lower it.
