NOTE:
Numbers in text refer to numbers in figures.
- Disconnect battery. See INSTRUCTIONS FOR DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING BATTERY. On 540i, press down interlocks (1-4) and remove noise insulation cover. See Fig 1 .
- Remove complete exhaust system. For E38, see REMOVING AND INSTALLING COMPLETE EXHAUST SYSTEM (M52, M60, M62). For E39, see REMOVING AND INSTALLING COMPLETE EXHAUST SYSTEM (M62).
- On 740i and 740iL, remove heat shield (1). See Fig 2 .
- Remove heat shield and brackets for left and right splash guards. See Fig 3 .
- Brace clamping section (1) and loosen nut (2). See Fig 4 .
- Lift out retaining plate (1) with a screwdriver. See Fig 5 . Remove cable (2).
- Remove heat shield (1) on left front axle support. See Fig 6 .
- Remove bracket for oil lines on engine oil pan. See Fig 7 .
- On 540i, remove bracket for oil lines from the power steering pump. See Fig 8 .
- Place oil container below. Unfasten banjo bolt (1) at inlet and remove oil line. See Fig 9 .
- Unfasten cap screw (2) on return and pull off oil line. See Fig 10 . Move both oil lines to the left side.
- Support transmission with Special Tools (00 2 030 / 24 5 301 / 24 0 250). See Fig 11 .
- Unclip cable for oxygen sensors on transmission cross-member. Unfasten screws and remove transmission crossmember. For 740i and 740iL, see Fig 12 . For 540i, see Fig 13 .
- On 540i vehicles, remove heat shields (1, 2). See Fig 14 .
- Unfasten screws. See Fig 15 .
- Brace propeller shaft on center mount and loosen nuts. See Fig 16 . DO NOT let propeller shaft fall into joints. Joints and rubber sleeve on constant-velocity joint can be damaged. See Fig 17 .
- Bend propeller shaft downwards at center bearing. Remove from transmission output flange and tie up to one side with a thread or wire.
- Unlock plug connection and disconnect. See Fig 18 . Unclip cable on transmission case.
- Unlock and remove cable connector (1). See Fig 19 . Pull cable connector (2) off impulse sensor.
- Lift off cover. See Fig 20 .
- Unfasten 4 retaining screws for torque converter with Special Tool (24 1 110). See Fig 21 . Continue turning engine on central screw in enginewise direction.
- Unscrew screw. Press guide tube for positive battery lead downwards slightly. See Fig 22 .
- Fit Special Tool (11 7 310) between engine oil pan and front axle support. See Fig 23 . Turn front wheels to right lock to ensure that center track rod is not subjected to excessive loads when transmission is lowered. Lower transmission until engine oil pan is located on Special Tool (11 7 310).
- Protect torque converter from slipping out. To do so, insert Special Tool (24 4 131 / 24 4 132) in recess in transmission case and tighten down. See Fig 24 .
- Unfasten screws. See Fig 25 . Pull transmission backwards and lower.
