51 71 200 Removing and Installing/Replacing Seal On Rear Door, Left or Right

Necessary preliminary tasks: 

NOTE:

The positioning of the seal must be established in five areas of the rear door with positioning aids to be stuck on.

Positioning aids are included with new seals.

Position of seal (4) on rear door:

Area (A) at distance (D) to door rabbet.

Area (B) at line (1) to positioning aids (3) to be stuck on.

Area (C) at distance (E) to seal (5).

Clean bonding surfaces on paint with adhesive cleaner (sourcing reference: BMW Parts Department).

  1. D = 2.4 mm
  2. E = 17.5 mm

Detach prestamped positioning aid from backing.

Align positioning aid with printed help markings (X, Y) and contact edge (2) to rear door and press.

Seal must rest on positioning edge (1) during sticking.

  1. X Start of bend radius
  2. Y Bore for door brake

Detach prestamped positioning aid from backing.

Align positioning aid with printed help markings (X, Y), bores and contact edge (2) to rear door and press.

Seal must rest on positioning edge (1) during sticking.

  1. X Start of bend radius
  2. Y Bore for door brake
  3. Z Opening due to folding

Detach prestamped positioning aid from backing.

Align positioning aid with printed help markings (X, Y), bores, screw heads and contact edge (2) to rear door and press.

Seal must rest on positioning edge (1) during sticking.

  1. X Start of bend radius
  2. Y Bore for door lock
  3. Z Cut out if reflector is fitted

Detach prestamped positioning aid from backing.

Align positioning aid with printed help markings (X, Y), bore, line (3) of positioning aid (C4) and contact edge (2) to rear door and press.

Seal must rest on positioning edge (1) during sticking.

  1. X Start of bend radius
  2. Y Bore for door lock

Detach prestamped positioning aid from backing.

Align positioning aid with printed help markings (X, Y), line (4) of positioning aid (C4) and contact edge (2) to rear door and press.

Seal must rest on positioning edge (1) during sticking.

  1. X Start of bend radius
  2. Y Bore for door brake
  3. Z Opening due to folding
CAUTION:
  • Do not grip bonding surface.
  • It is not the length of pressing in time but rather the level of pressing (approx. 10 ... 15 N/cm2 ) which is decisive here.
  • Separation of seal after pressing destroys the adhesive layer.
NOTE: After being pressed on gently, seal can be pulled off again up to 3 times. Do not dirty adhesive area.

Suspend seal (1) with open lip pointing inwards over door. Pull protection of positioning aid (liner) off seal in sections.

Stick on seal (1) as follows:

Remove positioning aids and assemble front door.
