64 51 591 Removing and Installing/Replacing Evaporator (High Automatic A/C)

NOTE: The time value given for this work operation does not include drawing off, evacuating and filling the A/C system!

Drain off air conditioner See 64 50 009 DRAWING OFF, EVACUATING AND FILLING A/C SYSTEM (R 134A)

IMPORTANT:

Risk of damage!

Restart engine only when A/C system has been correctly filled.

NOTE:

If A/C system is opened for more than 24 hours: Replace desiccant insert for A/C system See 64 53 551 REMOVING AND INSTALLING OR REPLACING CONDENSER FOR A/C SYSTEM

Comply with notes and instructions on handling fiber-optic cables. See 61 00 ... NOTES ON HANDLING OPTICAL FIBERS

Necessary preliminary tasks:

Disconnect battery negative lead See 61 20 900 DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING BATTERY NEGATIVE LEAD
Remove heater See 64 11 205 REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING HEATER
Remove heating element See 64 11 208 REPLACING HEATING ELEMENT (HIGH AUTOMATIC A/C)

After installation:

Venting cooling system and checking for water leaks

IMPORTANT:

Do not bend cooling fins.

If necessary, clean/align cooling fins with slat comb.

Remove retainers (1).

Unlock retaining lugs (2) in direction of arrow and remove defroster vents (3) towards top.

Installation:

Check retaining lugs (1) of defroster vent (2), replace defroster vent if necessary.

Retaining lugs (1) of defroster vents must snap audibly into place.

Disconnect plug connection (1).

Release screws (2).

Unclip control lever for fresh air flap (3).

Feed out servomotor bracket (4).

Installation:

Guide (1) of control lever for recirculating air flap (2) must be exactly seated in mounting (3) of shutter cassette (4).

Release screws (1).

Feed out shutter cassette (2) in direction of arrow.

Release screws (1).

Unlock arrester hook (2) and remove cover for expansion valve (3).

Disconnect plug connection (1).

Unclip linkage (2 3) in direction of arrow.

Release screws (1).

Remove upper housing section of heater (2) in direction of arrow.

Detach retainers (1) from heater housing (2).

Pull evaporator (1) in direction of arrow out of heater housing (2).
