Section 12 (Clutches - 5 Series (E39)): Bleeding

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 17 other vehicles, including the 2003 BMW M5, 2003 BMW 540i, 2003 BMW 530i, 2003 BMW 525i, and 2002 BMW M5. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Ensure fluid reservoir remains full. Attach hose to bleed valve on slave cylinder. Submerge other end of hose in partially filled container of brake fluid.
  2. Pump clutch pedal several times. Hold pedal down on last stroke. Slowly loosen bleed screw to allow air to escape. Close bleed screw and release clutch pedal. Repeat until air is bled from system.
  3. Remove clutch slave cylinder, with hydraulic line attached. With bleeder hose still attached, rotate slave cylinder so bleed screw is pointing up. Loosen bleed screw.
  4. Slowly pump piston rod until no air bubbles are present. DO NOT allow piston rod to return quickly. This will allow air to be sucked in. Top off fluid reservoir.
