16 14... Fitting aid quick connector / retainer repair kit (US vehicle with engine N51)

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 14 other vehicles, including the 2013 BMW 328xi, 2013 BMW 328i, 2012 BMW 328xi, 2012 BMW 328i, and 2011 BMW 328xi. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

NOTE:

These instructions serve as an aid for handling the quick connectors to the fuel pump and filter housing upper part for vehicles with engine N51!

It also describes how to remove and replace damaged retainers from the quick connector.

The parts listed below are included as practice or replacement parts in the quick connector repair kit.

Connect quick connector to the supplied filter housing upper part and lock.

Then attempt to unlock the quick connector by pressing the retainer.

IMPORTANT:

The retainer cannot be unlocked if the quick connector is tensile-loaded!

Do not use any tools to unlock the retainer!

The mechanical locking device (1) prevents the retainer from being operated under tension.

The mechanical locking device (1) prevents the quick connector from releasing accidentally.

IMPORTANT:

To unlock the retainer, the quick connector must be pressed in the direction of the filter housing upper part.

Do not use any tools to unlock the retainer!

Press in retainer and hold.

IMPORTANT: Do not use any tools to press the retainer!

Hold the retainer pressed and pull off the quick connector from the filter housing upper part.

IMPORTANT: Pulling off the quick connector requires little effort when the retainer is correctly locked!

Unlock and disconnect quick connector from fuel pump / filter housing upper part as described above.

Apply supplied metal ruler between the retainer and quick connector to the left or right and insert with slight effort.

A light left-right movement will position the metal ruler correctly in the retainer.

Move the metal ruler upwards (A) thus levering the retainer out of the housing of the quick connector.

Check whether the housing of the quick connector was damaged (B)

(C) not OK - defective
(D) OK

Insert supplied adapter as shown into the quick connector.

IMPORTANT: Ensure that the adapter is completely inserted!

Insert new retainer (yellow) into the quick connector and press in up to the end stop in one motion.

Only slight effort is required for pressing in new retainer.

IMPORTANT:

The retaining pins of the retainer (1) must point in the direction of the adapter!

When pressing in, avoid jamming the retaining pin (1) and the edge of housing!

Function check:

Ensure that the retaining function of the quick connector is working properly by pulling (A) on the adapter.

Then release the holding function by pressing the retainer and pulling out the adapter (B and C).

IMPORTANT:

The pins of the retainer (1) must sit completely in the housing of the quick connector!

Check whether the retainer is seated completely in the quick connector! The retainer must be flush with the housing of the quick connector!

Then check the function by pressing the retainer! The retainer must spring back completely to its initial position!
