Removal & Installation

  1. Before proceeding, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS  . Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Remove 4 screws and lower instrument panel trim panel at bottom right. Disconnect footwell light and remove trim panel.
  2. Remove 6 screws and pull glove box toward rear until Bowden cable is accessible. See Figure . Pry out lock and detach Bowden cable and nipple. Disconnect knee air bag module connector, if equipped. Disconnect glove box light connector and remove glove box.
  3. Open fins on right fresh air grille. Attach Grill Extractor (64 1 030) on both side and pull grill out slightly. Close fins and remove right fresh air grille. Using Disassembly Aid (00 9 341), pry up control display fresh air grille. Grip through openings, pull up and remove control display trim. Pull center fresh air grille toward rear of vehicle and remove.
  4. Unclip instrument cluster trim by applying light upward thumb pressure to left and right wood trim. Remove screws from inside center fresh air grill opening. Remove nut from right side of wood trim panel. Using Fishbone (00 9 3210) inserted through fresh air grille openings, pry wood trim panel from instrument panel.
  5. Remove CD changer, if equipped. From under instrument panel, disconnect passenger-side air bag module harness connector. See Fig 1 . Remove and lay retaining clips to one side. Support air bag module and remove retaining screws. Lower air bag module and remove from vehicle.
  6. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten passenger-side air bag module retaining screws to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  . Activate air bag system. See ACTIVATING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM.
