Removal & Installation (Front)

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 BMW M5, 2003 BMW 540i, 2003 BMW 530i, and 2003 BMW 525i. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Before proceeding, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS  . Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Remove headliner. See HEADLINER  .
  2. Remove steering wheel. See STEERING WHEEL  . Remove steering column adjustment switch and allow to hang down. Remove instrument cluster retaining screws and instrument cluster. Remove glove box. Remove passenger-side air bag module. See PASSENGER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE  . Remove hood release lever. Remove left and right kick panels.
  3. Remove left and right instrument panel under covers. Remove screws on front left and right sides of instrument panel. Remove bolts on bottom left and right of instrument panel (in footwell area). Lift out right and left instrument panel end covers. Lift instrument panel rearward and disconnect electrical connectors. Remove instrument panel.
  4. Gas generator is located on cowl just below window sill. Disconnect HPS gas generator electrical connector. Remove bolt securing gas generator and bracket to side cowl and remove gas generator.
  5. Remove screw securing HPS tether to A-pillar. See Fig 1 . Remove screw and bracket from keyed slot. Remove top A-pillar bracket retaining screw and remove bracket from keyed slot.
  6. Remove HPS air bag from under front grab handle bracket. Be careful not to damage air bag. Remove B-pillar bracket retaining screw and remove bracket from keyed slot. Remove rear grab handle bracket. Remove rear retaining screw securing HPS tether to roof. Remove air bag assembly.
  7. To install, reverse removal procedure. Ensure air bag does not contact any sharp edges either on body or on clips. Tighten nuts and screws to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  . Activate air bag system. See ACTIVATING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM.
