Parking Brake

  1. To set up parking brake, slacken parking brake cable adjusting nut at hand brake lever. Wind back the rear brake caliper piston. Fit brake pad linings into caliper. Ensure pad retention spring is fitted in piston groove. Fit the caliper over the brake disc and secure it to the bracket.
  2. With parking brake lever released, check whether the stop of control lever makes contact with grooved pin and the circular section at the end of the cable is correctly located in the caliper support. Cable support has a torsion lock. With correct fit, cable twisting is impossible.
  3. Adjust parking brake cable on adjusting nut at parking brake lever until the control lever on the calipers lift .039-.078" (1-2 mm) from the grooved pin. The measurement between the grooved pin and control lever is carried out using a feeler gauge.
  4. Slowly and forcefully press the brake pedal several times (one shot adjustment). Forcefully pull parking brake and then release. Check wheels for freedom of movement.
  5. The hand brake can only be adjusted correctly when the parking brake Bowden cables and all moving hand brake parts are free to move and fully operational. Basic hand brake adjustment is necessary:
    • When replacing rear wheel brake pads.
    • When replacing brake disks.
    • In event of excessive actuation stroke (6 teeth).
    • When replacing parking brake Bowden cables.
    • When replacing hand brake lever.
  6. To set parking brake Bowden cables, release gaiter of parking brake lever from clip. Loosen self-locking nut until the load on the Bowden cable has been relieved completely. See Fig 1. Remove rear brake pads. See DISC PADS (REAR) . Insert brake piston into brake caliper with Special Tools (346301, 346306, 346307 and 346308). See Fig 2. Install brake pads. Screw in adjusting nut on hand brake lever until there is a gap of .07-.12" (2-3 mm) between hand brake actuating lever and notched pin is set at brake calipers. See Fig 3.
  7. Release adjusting nut on hand brake lever. Remove brake pads. Insert brake piston into brake caliper. Install brake pads. Adjust adjusting nut on hand brake lever. Apply hand brake lever 3 times. Press brake pedal to floor at least 3 times so gap can be set. Check parking brake operation. Indicator light can light on first tooth, but must light on second tooth.
