51 31 021 Removing and installing/replacing rubber frame for windscreen (top)

Necessary Preliminary Tasks:

Remove cover for left A-pillar. Refer to 51 31 045 REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING TRIM ON A-PILLAR, LEFT OR RIGHT .
Remove left roof strip. Refer to 51 13 301 REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING FINISHER - ROOF PANEL - SIDE .

NOTE: Both covers and roof strips must be removed in order to remove the windscreen.

CAUTION: Rubber frame (1) features an aluminum section inlay (2). Carefully unwind rubber frame (1) (windscreen breakage). Do not use crowbar (windscreen breakage)

NOTE: Tear-off lip (3) may be stuck to adhesive (4). During removal of rubber frame (1), tear-off lip (3) may tear off and remain in vehicle.

5) Windscreen.
6) Gripping lip.

Installation Note:

Replacement of rubber frame without windscreen removal:

Detach tear-off lip (3) from rubber frame (1).

If adhesive leaks over tear-off lip (3), this area must be cut out partially.

Cut (4) as illustrated in area (A) on left/right.

To replace rubber frame without removing windscreen:

Cellular material strip (1) must be fitted in position and must not be damaged, replace if necessary, refer to appropriate article.
Cover cellular material strip (1) with masking tape (2).
Slide rubber frame (3) from side onto windscreen (4).
Carefully remove masking tape (2).

Installation Note:

Wet rubber frame (1) and body aperture with soap solution (1 part soap to 20 parts water).

If necessary, use a plastic-headed hammer to fit the new rubber frame.

Rinse off residual soap with water.

To replace rubber frame with windscreen removed:

Adhere new cellular material strip to top of body aperture, refer to appropriate article.

Before bonding windscreen:

Tear-off lip (3) remains on rubber frame (1).

Do not cut gripping lip (4).

Slide new rubber frame (1) onto upper edge of windscreen (5), ensuring correct alignment.

To Fit Cellular Material Strip:

Mark center line (1) on body aperture.

Adhere cellular material strip (3) approx. 1 mm below roof edge (2).
