Pedal Free Play & Height
- Measure brake pedal height, between top center of brake pedal pad and floor pan. If brake pedal height is not 7.5" (190 mm), check brake pedal components for wear or damage. If pedal components are okay, check master cylinder and power booster.
- Hook a steel measuring tape to brake pedal. Measure and record distance from brake pedal free height position to 6 o'clock position on steering wheel rim. With steel tape still hooked to brake pedal, start engine. Release parking brake.
- Apply 25 lbs. (111 N) pressure to center of brake pedal, using Brake Pedal Effort Gauge (Rotunda 021-00001). Maintain pedal load and measure distance from brake pedal to fixed reference point on steering wheel rim, parallel to centerline of steering column.
- The difference between brake pedal free height and depressed pedal measurement under a 25 lb. load should be 2 3/16-2 1/4" (55.6-57.2 mm). If pedal travel is more than specified, move vehicle backward and forward about 10 feet.
- Apply brakes until vehicle comes to a complete stop to actuate brake self-adjusters. Perform this procedure several times. If pedal travel still is not correct, remove brake drum and check brake self-adjusters. Check brake linings for wear or damage. Adjust brake lining outside diameter to approximate inside diameter of brake drum.
