Fuel Gauge
NOTE:
DO NOT ground or spark either terminal or wiring to integral voltage regulator. Damage to integral voltage regulator or instrument cluster printed circuit will result.
- Disconnect fuel gauge sending unit wire at fuel tank. Clean connector and terminal as necessary. Connect a voltmeter between gauge lead and ground. Turn ignition on. Check for 10 volts on voltmeter. If there is 10 volts, proceed to step 3). If there is not 10 volts, connect voltmeter leads to fuel gauge terminal and ground at instrument cluster.
- Check for 10 volts. If there is 10 volts, inspect and repair wiring or printed circuit between gauge and sending unit. Repeat step 1). If there is not 10 volts, replace gauge module and repeat step 1).
- If there was 10 volts in step 1), move voltmeter ground lead to ground wire in fuel tank sending unit connector. Turn ignition on. Check for 10 volts. If there is not 10 volts, repair ground wiring and repeat step 3).
- With sending unit connector disconnected, connect an 18-ohm, 10-watt resistor between gauge lead and ground. With ignition on, fuel gauge reading should be "FULL" or above. Remove 18-ohm resistor and connect a 275-ohm, one-watt resistor between gauge lead and ground. Reading should be "EMPTY" or below.
- If gauge did not read as specified, proceed to FUEL GAUGE SENDING UNIT test. If gauge read correctly, disconnect wiring connector from sending unit and connect a known good sending unit to connector. With ignition on and float rod against the full stop, fuel gauge should read "FULL" or above. With float rod against empty stop, fuel gauge should read "EMPTY" or below. Allow 2 minutes for gauge to stabilize at each sending unit stop.
- If gauge did not read as specified, replace fuel temperature gauge assembly and repeat steps 4) and 5). If gauge reading is as specified, proceed to FUEL GAUGE SENDING UNIT test.
