Bench Test

  1. Connect ohmmeter leads to sending unit ground terminal and variable resistor terminal. Position float rod against empty stop. If ohmmeter reading is not 245-255 ohms, replace sending unit.
  2. If ohmmeter reading is 245-255 ohms, move float between full and empty stops. Ohmmeter reading should increase and decrease smoothly, without jumping or hesitating, between 18-255 ohms. If ohmmeter reading is more than 255 ohms, or less than 18 ohms, or if resistance reading jumps or hesitates throughout the arm swing, replace sending unit.
  3. Move float rod to full stop position. Ohmmeter reading should be 18-20 ohms. If reading is not to specification, replace sending unit. Before reinstalling or installing a new sending unit in fuel tank, connect wiring harness to sending unit and move rod to empty and full stops to check fuel gauge readings.
