Drive Pinion Bearing Depth & Preload

  1. Install axle stub shaft seals into bearing carriers. Position standard 2 mm pinion depth shim (manufacturing shim) in inner bearing outer race housing bore. Lightly oil bearing bores in housing.
  2. Install inner and outer bearing outer races into housing using Pinion Bearing Cup Replacers (T85M-4616-A and T56T-4616-B2) and Drawbolt (T75T-1176-A).
  3. Lubricate drive pinion bearings with gear oil. Install pinion bearings and dummy pinion shaft into housing. See Fig 1 . Ensure Gauge Screw (T76P-4020-A9) is tight in Gauge Disc (T85P-4020-A2) before installing into housing.

  4. Hold gauge disc stationary and gradually tighten Handle (T76P-4020-A11) until rotating torque of 14-18 INCH lbs. (1.6-2.0 N.m) is measured at handle. Rotate gauge 10 times to seat bearings before measuring rotating torque.
  5. Position Pinion Depth Gauge Tube (T85M-4020-A1) in housing. Ensure tube gauging surface is aligned with gauge disc. Install bearing carriers. Bearing carriers MUST BE installed in original housing bores and without "O" ring seals. Thread bearing carriers evenly into housing.
  6. When carriers contact gauge tube, snug them down to remove all end play from tube. Carriers are properly installed when a moderate amount of effort is required to rotate gauge tube by hand.
  7. Slide various drive pinion depth shims between gauge tube and gauge disc. Correct shim thickness is obtained when a slight drag is felt between shim and gauging surfaces. This determines pinion depth thickness for a "nominal" or "zero" variance pinion. See Fig 2 .

  8. If pinion is marked with a plus "+" number, subtract that amount from shim thickness in step 7). If pinion is marked with a minus "-" number, add that amount to shim thickness obtained in step 7). See PINION DEPTH SHIM VARIANCE  table.

  9. Remove bearing carriers, pinion depth gauges and bearings. Install correct pinion depth shim on pinion. Press inner bearing onto pinion. Ensure depth shim is in position before installing bearing. Install new collapsible spacer on drive pinion.
  10. Lubricate pinion bearings and install pinion into housing. Install front pinion bearing. Install new pinion nut. To preload pinion bearings, gradually tighten pinion nut using Pinion Nut Socket (T85M-4610-A) and Pinion Spline Socket (T85M-4610-B). Hold pinion nut socket stationary while turning pinion spline socket.
  11. Check pinion bearing rotating torque using torque wrench and pinion spline socket. Tighten pinion nut until rotating torque of 14-18 INCH lbs. (1.6-2.0 N.m) is obtained.
  12. If nut is tightened beyond specified rotating torque, install a new collapsible spacer and repeat pinion bearing preload procedure. Stake pinion nut to pinion. Lubricate and install pinion seal, using Installer (T80T-4000-C). Install pinion flange and mounting nut. Tighten mounting nut to 95-110 ft. lbs. (129-149 N.m).
