Wheel Bearing: Removal

  1. Remove spindle carrier. See SPINDLE CARRIER REMOVAL. Install a metric nut on each wheel stud. Tighten nuts and install spindle in soft-jawed vise.
  2. Vise jaws should grip wheel nuts and spindle lock nut cover plate should face upward. DO NOT overtighten spindle in vise.
    NOTE: The spindle lock nut can have left-hand or right-hand threads. The left side spindle nut has right-hand threads and a Blue Nylock insert. The right side spindle nut has left-hand threads and a Yellow Nylock insert.
  3. Remove spindle lock nut cover plate. Remove spindle bearing lock nut and lift spindle carrier (and bearing) from spindle shaft. Remove inner bearing and splined washer from spindle.
  4. If bearings will be reused, tag bearing for reassembly reference. Clamp spindle carrier in vise and remove outer bearing seal. Remove outer bearing from spindle carrier. Tag outer bearing for reassembly reference.
  5. Use Bearing Cup Remover (T77F-1102-A) and a slide hammer to remove outer bearing cup. Carefully remove inner bearing race. Bearing puller jaws MUST NOT contact bearing cup seat (in center of hub). If bearings are being reused, tag bearing races for reassembly reference.
NOTE: Be careful not to create a burr on bearing race seat when pulling bearing race.
