Orifice Tube Replacement - All Other Models
- Ford Fixed Orifice Tube (FFOT) is located in evaporator inlet pipe. Disconnect battery negative cable. Discharge A/C system using approved refrigerant recovery/recycling equipment. Disconnect liquid line at evaporator.
- To disconnect liquid line, fit appropriate spring lock coupling clamp to line. See Figure . Close clamp and push into opening side of cage to expand garter spring and release female fitting. After garter spring is expanded, pull coupling apart. See SPRING LOCK COUPLING CLAMP table.
- Pour small amount of refrigeration oil into inlet tube to lubricate orifice tube and its "O" rings. Attach Orifice Tube Remover/Installer (T83L-19990-A) to 2 tangs on fixed orifice tube. See Fig 1 .
- Hold "T" handle of orifice tube remover to keep it from turning, and run the nut down against inlet line until orifice tube is pulled from inlet. If orifice tube breaks in inlet, it must be removed with an orifice tube extractor.
- To remove broken orifice tube, insert screw end of extractor into inlet and thread into orifice tube. Run extractor nut down against liquid line, removing orifice tube. See Fig 2 .
- If only the brass center tube is extracted, insert screw end of extractor into inlet. Screw end of extractor into fixed orifice tube body. Remove tube body from evaporator core line.
- To install, lubricate 2 "O" rings on orifice tube with clean refrigeration oil. Place orifice tube into installer. Insert orifice tube into evaporator tube until orifice tube seats at stop.
- Remove extractor tool and reverse rest of removal procedure to complete installation. Use a new "O" ring when installing liquid line to evaporator core line. Leak-test, evacuate and recharge system. Check system for proper operation.
NOTE:
DO NOT attempt to twist or rotate tube in core pipe, as it may break inside pipe.
