Rear Brake Shoes: Installation

NOTE: Before installing brake shoes, ensure wheel hub and wheel cylinder attaching bolts are tightened.
  1. Apply a light coat of grease supplied with new brake shoes to support ledges where brake shoes contact backing plate. Connect parking brake cable to secondary shoe lever.
  2. To connect parking brake cable, position cable end through lever. Grip cable end with locking type pliers and push lever against spring until it can be rotated over cable. When properly installed, plastic washer will be between spring and lever.
  3. Position secondary shoe and install hold-down spring. Install strut and cam assembly on primary shoe. Rotate cam to fully released position. Install adjuster cam spring. See Fig 1 .

  4. Install primary shoe spring. Install strut spring in secondary shoe and then in strut. Place strut on parking brake lever and move primary shoe toward backing plate. Strut will then "click" into place over parking brake lever and secondary shoe web.
  5. Install lower shoe spring with longer leg on secondary shoe. Pry lower end of primary shoe into position against anchor while holding top of shoe against backing plate. Take care not to damage the cylinder boot.
  6. Install primary shoe hold-down pin, spring and washer. Make sure heel of each brake shoe is located behind anchor plate. Check each brake component for proper installation. If necessary, push adjuster cam to released position.
  7. Install both brake drums. Push brake pedal hard to set self-adjuster cam position. Cam will make a racheting sound as it resets. Adjust parking brake cable as necessary.
