Rear Brake Shoes: Removal

  1. Remove wheel and brake drum. Discard brake drum retaining clip. If brake drum is difficult to remove, self-adjuster must be released by first removing wheel cylinder mounting bolts. Push the wheel cylinder away from backing plate to gain access opening. Insert a thin flat tip screwdriver. See Fig 1 . Rotate self adjuster to the released position.

  2. Remove both brake shoe hold-down springs. To prevent hold-down springs from rotating during removal, hold each hold-down pin head with a finger behind backing plate. Pry lower end of primary shoe from its position against anchor.
  3. Remove lower return spring. Remove shoes and strut by passing strut between wheel cylinder and hub. Pull top of primary shoe away from secondary shoe to disconnect strut from secondary shoe.
  4. Disconnect parking brake cable from secondary shoe lever. Remove strut return spring from secondary shoe. Remove adjuster cam spring. Pull primary shoe away from strut while rotating cam to fully depressed position.
  5. Remove primary shoe spring. Remove primary shoe from strut.
