Pinpoint Test L: The Charging System Warning Indicator Is Never/Always On

  1. L1 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM BOTH CONTINUOUS AND ON-DEMAND PCM SELF-TESTS 
    • Check the recorded PCM DTCs from the continuous and on-demand self-tests.
    • Are any PCM DTCs recorded? 
    1. YES  : REFER to INTRODUCTION - GASOLINE ENGINES or INTRODUCTION -- HYBRID ENGINES article.
    2. NO  : Go to  L2.
  2. L2 CHECK THE CHARGING SYSTEM 
    1. YES  : Go to  L3.
    2. NO  : REFER to CHARGING SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION article.
  3. L3 CARRY OUT THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER WARNING LAMPS AND CHIME ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE SCAN TOOL 
    • Key in ON position.
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: Instrument Cluster Active Command
    • Select the instrument cluster indicator lamp control active command. Select the ALL_LAMP active command on and off. Observe the charging system warning indicator.
    • Does the charging system warning indicator illuminate when selected on, and turn off when selected off? 
    1. YES  : Go to  L5.
    2. NO  : Go to  L4.
  4. L4 CHECK FOR CORRECT INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OPERATION 
    • Disconnect the instrument cluster connector.
    • Check for:
      • corrosion
      • damaged pins
      • pushed-out pins
    • Connect the instrument cluster connector and make sure it seats correctly.
    • Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to Instrument Cluster . TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. NO  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
  5. L5 CHECK FOR CORRECT PCM OPERATION 
    • Disconnect all the PCM connectors.
    • Check for:
      • corrosion
      • damaged pins
      • pushed-out pins
    • Connect all the PCM connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new PCM. REFER to ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS - 2.3L article, ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS - 3.0L (4V) article or ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS - HYBRID article. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. NO  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
