PINPOINT TEST N: DTCs C1322, C1323, C1324 AND C1325 - BRAKE HYDRAULIC MASTER CYLINDER PISTON TRAVEL SENSOR CIRCUIT FAULT/FAILURE

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2006 Mercury Mariner and 2006 Ford Escape. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Use the Flex Probe Kit for all test connections to prevent damage to the wiring terminals. Do not use standard multi-meter probes.
NOTE: The brake pedal position sensor is integral to the master cylinder. The brake pedal position sensor is not available separately and must be installed as an assembly.
NOTE: The ABS module is matched to the HCU. The ABS module and HCU must be installed as an assembly.
  1. N1 RETRIEVE THE ABS MODULE DTCs 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Connect the diagnostic tool.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: Self Test ABS Module
    • Retrieve and record any ABS module DTCs.
    • Are DTCs C1322, C1323, C1324 and/or C1325 present? 
    1. YES  : For DTCs C1322 and/or C1323  , go to  N2.

      For DTCs C1324 and/or C1325  , go to  N7.

    2. NO  : For all other DTCs  , go to ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS) MODULE DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) INDEX .

      If no DTCs are present  , the system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.

  2. N2 CHECK CIRCUITS LCB26 (BU/BN), VCB27 (GY/YE) AND RCB26 (GN/WH) FOR AN OPEN 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: ABS Module C1462
    • Disconnect: Brake Pedal Position Sensor C1347
    • Measure the resistance between:
      • ABS module C1462-18, circuit LCB26 (BU/BN), harness side and brake pedal position sensor C1347-3, circuit LCB26 (BU/BN), harness side.
      • ABS module C1462-19, circuit VCB27 (GY/YE), harness side and brake pedal position sensor C1347-2, circuit VCB27 (GY/YE), harness side.
      • ABS module C1462-20, circuit RCB26 (GN/WH), harness side and brake pedal position sensor C1347-1, circuit RCB26 (GN/WH), harness side.

    • Are the resistances less than 5 ohms? 
    1. YES  : Go to  N3.
    2. NO  : REPAIR the affected circuit(s). CLEAR the DTC. REPEAT the self-test.
  3. N3 CHECK CIRCUITS LCB26 (BU/BN), VCB27 (GY/YE) AND RCB26 (GN/WH) FOR A SHORT TOGETHER 
    • Measure the resistance between:
      • brake pedal position sensor C1347-1, circuit RCB26 (GN/WH), harness side and brake pedal position sensor C1347-2, circuit VCB27 (GY/YE), harness side.
      • brake pedal position sensor C1347-1, circuit RCB26 (GN/WH), harness side and brake pedal position sensor C1347-3, circuit LCB26 (BU/BN), harness side.
      • brake pedal position sensor C1347-2, circuit VCB27 (GY/YE), harness side and brake pedal position sensor C1347-3, circuit LCB26 (BU/BN), harness side.
    • Are the resistances greater than 10,000 ohms? 
    1. YES  : Go to  N4.
    2. NO  : REPAIR the affected circuit(s). CLEAR the DTC. REPEAT the self-test.
  4. N4 CHECK CIRCUITS LCB26 (BU/BN), VCB27 (GY/YE) AND RCB26 (GN/WH) FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE 
    • Key in ON position.
    • Measure the voltage between ground and:
      • brake pedal position sensor C1347-1, circuit RCB26 (GN/WH), harness side.
      • brake pedal position sensor C1347-2, circuit VCB27 (GY/YE), harness side.
      • brake pedal position sensor C1347-3, circuit LCB26 (BU/BN), harness side.

    • Is any voltage present? 
    1. YES  : REPAIR the affected circuit(s). CLEAR the DTC. REPEAT the self-test.
    2. NO  : Go to  N5.
  5. N5 CHECK CIRCUITS LCB26 (BU/BN), VCB27 (GY/YE) AND RCB26 (GN/WH) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Measure the resistance between ground and:
      • brake pedal position sensor C1347-1, circuit RCB26 (GN/WH), harness side.
      • brake pedal position sensor C1347-2, circuit VCB27 (GY/YE), harness side.
      • brake pedal position sensor C1347-3, circuit LCB26 (BU/BN), harness side.

    • Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? 
    1. YES  : Go to  N6.
    2. NO  : REPAIR the affected circuit(s). CLEAR the DTC. REPEAT the self-test.
  6. N6 CHECK THE ABS MODULE OUTPUT ON CIRCUIT LCB26 (BU/BN) 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Connect: ABS Module C1462
    • Key in ON position.
    • Measure the voltage between brake pedal position sensor C1347-3, circuit LCB26 (BU/BN), harness side and ground.

    • Is voltage approximately 5 volts? 
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new master cylinder. REFER to HYDRAULIC BRAKE SYSTEM ACTUATION article. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
    2. NO  : Go to  N12.
  7. N7 CHECK CIRCUITS LCA27 (BN/WH), VCA30 (YE/VT) AND RCA27 (WH) FOR AN OPEN 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: ABS Module C1462
    • Disconnect: Brake Pedal Position Sensor C1347
    • Measure the resistance between:
      • ABS module C1462-21, circuit RCA27 (WH), harness side and brake pedal position sensor C1347-4, circuit RCA27 (WH), harness side.
      • ABS module C1462-22, circuit LCA27 (BN/WH), harness side and brake pedal position sensor C1347-6, circuit LCA27 (BN/WH), harness side.
      • ABS module C1462-23, circuit VCA30 (YE/VT), harness side and brake pedal position sensor C1347-5, circuit VCA30 (YE/VT), harness side.

    • Is the resistances less than 5 ohms? 
    1. YES  : Go to  N8.
    2. NO  : REPAIR the affected circuit(s). CLEAR the DTC. REPEAT the self-test.
  8. N8 CHECK CIRCUITS LCA27 (BN/WH), VCA30 (YE/VT) AND RCA27 (WH) FOR A SHORT TOGETHER 
    • Measure the resistance between:
      • brake pedal position sensor C1347-4, circuit RCA27 (WH), harness side and brake pedal position sensor C1347-5, circuit VCA30 (YE/VT), harness side.
      • brake pedal position sensor C1347-4, circuit RCA27 (WH), harness side and brake pedal position sensor C1347-6, circuit LCA27 (BN/WH), harness side.
      • brake pedal position sensor C1347-5, circuit VCA30 (YE/VT), harness side and brake pedal position sensor C1347-6, circuit LCA27 (BN/WH), harness side.
    • Are the resistances greater than 10,000 ohms? 
    1. YES  : Go to  N9.
    2. NO  : REPAIR the affected circuit(s). CLEAR the DTC. REPEAT the self-test.
  9. N9 CHECK CIRCUITS LCA27 (BN/WH), VCA30 (YE/VT) AND RCA27 (WH) FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE 
    • Key in ON position.
    • Measure the voltage between ground and:
      • brake pedal position sensor C1347-4, circuit RCA27 (WH), harness side.
      • brake pedal position sensor C1347-5, circuit VCA30 (YE/VT), harness side.
      • brake pedal position sensor C1347-6, circuit LCA27 (BN/WH), harness side.

    • Is any voltage present? 
    1. YES  : REPAIR the affected circuit(s). CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
    2. NO  : Go to  N10.
  10. N10 CHECK CIRCUITS LCA27 (BN/WH), VCA30 (YE/VT) AND RCA27 (WH) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Measure the resistance between ground and:
      • brake pedal position sensor C1347-4, circuit RCA27 (WH), harness side.
      • brake pedal position sensor C1347-5, circuit VCA30 (YE/VT), harness side.
      • brake pedal position sensor C1347-6, circuit LCA27 (BN/WH), harness side.

    • Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? 
    1. YES  : Go to  N11.
    2. NO  : REPAIR the affected circuit(s). CLEAR the DTC. REPEAT the self-test.
  11. N11 CHECK THE ABS MODULE OUTPUT ON CIRCUIT LCA27 (BN/WH) 
    • Connect: ABS Module C1462
    • Key in ON position.
    • Measure the voltage between brake pedal position sensor C1347-6, circuit LCA27 (BN/WH), harness side and ground.

    • Is voltage approximately 5 volts? 
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new master cylinder. REFER to HYDRAULIC BRAKE SYSTEM ACTUATION article. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
    2. NO  : Go to  N12.
  12. N12 CHECK FOR ABS MODULE OPERATION 
    • Disconnect: ABS Module C1462
    • Check the ABS module electrical connector and the brake pedal position sensor electrical connector for:
      • corrosion.
      • pushed-out pins.
      • spread terminals.
    • Connect: ABS Module C1462
    • Connect: Brake Pedal Position Sensor C1347
    • Key in ON position.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new HCU. REFER to HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT (HCU) . TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. NO  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
