Pinpoint Test K: The Brake Warning Indicator Is Always On
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2008 Ford RV Cutaway, 2008 Ford Econoline, 2008 Ford E450 Super Duty, and 2008 Ford Cutaway. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE:
Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.
NOTE:
Verify that the brake fluid level is filled to the maximum line on the brake fluid reservoir and the parking brake is fully released before beginning diagnostics.
- K1 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM BOTH THE CONTINUOUS AND ON-DEMAND ABS MODULE SELF-TESTS
- Check for recorded ABS module DTCs from the continuous and on-demand self-tests.
- Are any DTCs recorded?
- YES : REFER to VEHICLE DYNAMIC SYSTEMS article.
- NO : Go to K2.
- K2 CARRY OUT THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER (IC) INDICATOR LAMP CONTROL ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE SCAN TOOL
- Key in ON position.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: Instrument Cluster (IC) DataLogger
- Select the instrument cluster (IC) brake warning indicator (BRK_LAMP) active command. Command the brake warning lamp on and off. Observe the brake warning indicator.
- Does the brake warning indicator turn off when commanded off?
- K3 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM BOTH THE CONTINUOUS AND ON-DEMAND INSTRUMENT CLUSTER SELF-TESTS
- Check for recorded instrument cluster DTCs from the continuous and on-demand self-tests.
- Is DTC B2479 recorded?
- K4 CHECK BRAKE WARNING OPERATION
- Key in OFF position.
- Disconnect: Parking Brake Switch C2015
- Key in ON position.
- Does the brake warning indicator turn off?
- YES : INSTALL a new parking brake switch. TEST the system for normal operation.
- NO : Go to K5.
- K5 CHECK CIRCUIT 162 (LG/RD) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- Key in OFF position.
- Disconnect: Instrument Cluster (IC) C220b
- Measure the resistance between the parking brake switch C2015-1, circuit 162 (LG/RD), harness side and ground.
- Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms?
- YES : Go to K10.
- NO : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
- K6 CHECK THE BRAKE FLUID SWITCH
- Key in OFF position.
- Disconnect: Brake Fluid Level Switch C124
- Connect a fused jumper wire between brake fluid level switch C124-2, circuit 531 (DG/YE), harness side and brake fluid level switch C124-3, circuit 512 (TN/LG), harness side.
- Key in ON position.
- Does the brake warning indicator turn off?
- YES : REMOVE the jumper wire. INSTALL a new master cylinder. REFER to HYDRAULIC BRAKE ACTUATION article. TEST the system for normal operation.
- NO : REMOVE the jumper wire. Go to K7.
- K7 CHECK CIRCUITS 531 (DG/YE) AND 512 (TN/LG) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- Key in OFF position.
- Disconnect: Instrument Cluster (IC) C220b
- Measure the resistance between the instrument cluster (IC) C220b-19, circuit 531 (DG/YE), harness side and ground; and between the instrument cluster (IC) C220b-20, circuit 512 (TN/LG), harness side and ground.
- Are the resistances greater than 10,000 ohms?
- YES : Go to K8.
- NO : REPAIR the circuit in question. TEST the system for normal operation.
- K8 CHECK CIRCUIT 531 (DG/YE) FOR AN OPEN
- Measure the resistance between the instrument cluster (IC) C220b-19, circuit 531 (DG/YE), harness side and the brake fluid level switch C124-2, circuit 531 (DG/YE), harness side.
- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
- YES : Go to K9.
- NO : REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
- K9 CHECK CIRCUIT 512 (TN/LG) FOR AN OPEN
- Measure the resistance between the instrument cluster (IC) C220-20, circuit 512 (TN/LG), harness side and the brake fluid level switch C124-3, circuit 512 (TN/LG), harness side.
- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
- YES : Go to K10.
- NO : REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
- K10 CHECK FOR CORRECT INSTRUMENT CLUSTER (IC) OPERATION
- Disconnect all the instrument cluster (IC) connectors.
- Check for:
- corrosion
- damaged pins
- pushed-out pins
- Connect all the instrument cluster (IC) connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
- Is the concern still present?
- YES : INSTALL a new instrument cluster (IC). REFER to Instrument Cluster (IC) . TEST the system for normal operation.
- NO : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
