Pinpoint Test A: The Instrument Cluster (Ic) Is Inoperative

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2008 Ford RV Cutaway, 2008 Ford Econoline, 2008 Ford E450 Super Duty, and 2008 Ford Cutaway. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.
  1. A1 CHECK THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER (IC) VOLTAGE SUPPLY
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Instrument Cluster (IC) C220b
    • Fig 1: Checking Instrument Cluster (IC) Voltage Supply

    • Measure the voltage between the instrument cluster (IC), C220b-1, circuit 729 (RD/WH), harness side and ground.
    • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?
    1. YES  : Go to  A2.
    2. NO  : VERIFY the central junction box (CJB) fuse 22 (15A) is OK. If OK, REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  2. A2 CHECK THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER (IC) VOLTAGE SUPPLY
    • Disconnect: Instrument Cluster (IC) C220a
    • Key in ON position.
    • Fig 2: Checking Instrument Cluster (IC) Voltage Supply
      GF0044871Courtesy of FORD MOTOR CO.
    • Measure the voltage between the instrument cluster (IC), harness side and ground as follows:
      Instrument Cluster (IC) Connector-Pin Circuit
      C220a-5 1044 (WH/YE)
      C220b-2 295 (LB/PK)
    • Are the voltages greater than 10 volts?
    1. YES  : Go to  A3.
    2. NO  : VERIFY the central junction box (CJB) fuse(s) 14 (5A) and 15 (5A) are OK. If OK, REPAIR the circuit in question. TEST the system for normal operation.
  3. A3 CHECK CIRCUITS 938 (BK/LG) AND 57 (BK) FOR AN OPEN
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Fig 3: Checking Circuits 938 (BK/LG) & 57 (BK) For An Open

    • Measure the resistance between the instrument cluster (IC), harness side and ground as follows:
      Instrument Cluster (IC) Connector-Pin Circuit
      C220a-10 57 (BK)
      C220b-14 938 (BK/LG)
    • Are the resistances less than 5 ohms?
    1. YES  : Go to  A4.
    2. NO  : REPAIR the circuit in question. TEST the system for normal operation.
  4. A4 CHECK FOR CORRECT INSTRUMENT CLUSTER (IC) OPERATION
    • Disconnect all the instrument cluster (IC) connectors.
    • Check for:
      • corrosion
      • damaged pins
      • pushed-out pins
    • Connect all the instrument cluster (IC) connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present?
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new instrument cluster (IC). REFER to Instrument Cluster (IC) . TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. NO  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
