Normal Operation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2008 Mercury Mariner and 2008 Ford Escape. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

The yaw rate sensor, roll rate sensor, lateral accelerometer and longitudinal accelerometer are contained in one module called the stability control sensor cluster. The sensor cluster measures the vehicle acceleration, roll rate and yaw rate, then sends the signal through a secondary, dedicated controller area network (CAN2) bus to the ABS module. The ABS module compares the information from the sensor cluster to information it receives from other sensors (brake pedal input or steering wheel rotation sensor) to determine how valid the information is and to determine if a roll-over event is about to occur.

The ABS module provides power to the sensor cluster along circuit CCA09 (VT/BN) and ground along circuit RCA09 (GN/VT). The sensor cluster and the ABS module communicate along circuits VCA23 (BU/WH) and VCA24 (GN/OG). An open circuit or a short to power or ground on any one of these 4 circuits will cause the ABS module to set a DTC. Also, if the sensor cluster is not mounted in the correct position, with the electrical connector facing the passenger seat, the ABS module will also set DTCs.

DTC Description Fault Trigger Conditions
  • DTC B2741 - Sensor Cluster Defective
This is a general failure of the sensor cluster. An open or short to power or ground in one of the 4 sensor cluster circuits will cause the ABS module to set this fault. This DTC will also set if the sensor cluster is reporting information that is out of the normal range or operation, if there is an internal failure of the sensor, if the sensor cluster either has not been calibrated or lost the calibration or if the sensor is missing or mounted incorrectly.
  • DTC C1279 - Yaw Rate Sensor Circuit Failure
  • DTC C1280 - Yaw Rate Sensor Signal Fault
  • DTC C1281 - Lateral Accelerometer Circuit Failure
  • DTC C1282 - Lateral Accelerometer Signal Fault
  • DTC C1516 - Roll Rate Sensor Signal Fault
  • DTC C1517 - Roll Rate Sensor Circuit Failure
  • DTC C2769 - Longitudinal Acceleration Sensor Electrical Failure
  • DTC C2770 - Longitudinal Acceleration Sensor Plausibility Failu
An open or short to power or ground in one of the 4 sensor cluster circuits or an internal failure of the sensor will cause this fault to set.
  • DTC C2777 - Sensor Cluster Bus Failure
An open or short to power or ground in one of the CAN2 bus circuits or an internal failure of the sensor will cause this fault to set.
  • DTC C2778 - Sensor Power Supply Failure
An open or short to ground in the sensor cluster power supply circuit will cause this fault to set.
  • DTC U1901 - CAN Network No. 2 Communication Bus Fault - Receive Error
If the ABS module does not receive an expected message from the sensor cluster within a given period, the ABS module will set this fault.
