Pinpoint Test L: The Heated Seat Is Inoperative - Passenger

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2009 Mercury Grand Marquis and 2009 Ford Crown Victoria. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
WARNING: Remove restraint system diagnostic tools from the vehicle prior to road testing. If tools are not removed, the supplemental restraint system (SRS) device may not deploy in a crash. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury or death in a crash and possibly violate vehicle safety standards.
CAUTION: Use the correct probe adapter(s) from the Flex Probe Kit when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.
CAUTION: Most faults are due to connector and/or wiring concerns. Carry out a thorough inspection and verification before proceeding with the pinpoint test.
NOTE: The heater mat on the front passenger seat cushion is not serviceable separately. If a new heater mat is needed on the front passenger seat cushion, a new OCS system service kit and a new heater mat must be installed. Refer to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM article.
NOTE: If a passenger seat backrest heater mat is faulty, a new foam pad must be installed with the new heater mat. Do not reuse the original foam pad.
NOTE: The air bag warning indicator illuminates when the correct restraints control module (RCM) fuse is removed and the ignition switch is ON.
NOTE: The supplemental restraint system (SRS) must be fully operational and free of faults before releasing the vehicle to the customer.
  1. L1 CHECK THE HEATED SEAT SWITCH INPUT TO THE HEATED SEAT MODULE  
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Depower the SRS. Refer to Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Depowering and Repowering in the General Procedures portion of SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM article.
    • For vehicles equipped with seat side air bags, carry out the following:
      • Disconnect the passenger seat side air bag C316.
      • Connect the Restraint System Diagnostic Tool to the passenger seat side air bag C316.
    • Disconnect: Passenger Heated Seat Module C329
    • WARNING: Make sure no one is in the vehicle and there is nothing blocking or placed in front of any air bag module when the battery is connected. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury in the event of an accidental deployment.
    • Connect the battery ground cable. Refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING & CABLES article.

    • Measure the resistance between passenger heated seat module C329-8, circuit 581 (RD), and C329-11, circuit 1256 (WH/YE), harness side and ground while pressing the heated seat switch.
    • Are the resistances less than 5 ohms when the heated seat switch is pressed? 
    1. YES  : Go to  L3.
    2. NO  : Go to  L2.
  2. L2 CHECK HEATED SEAT SWITCH GROUND CIRCUIT 57 (BK) 
    • Disconnect: Passenger Heated Seat Switch C630

    • Measure the resistance between passenger heated seat switch C630-1, circuit 57 (BK), harness side and ground.
    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new heated seat switch. REFER to Heated Seat Switch . TEST the system for normal operation. For vehicles equipped with seat side air bags, DISCONNECT the battery ground cable. DISCONNECT the Restraint System Diagnostic Tool from passenger seat side air bag module C316. CONNECT passenger seat side air bag module C316. REPOWER the SRS. REFER to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM article.
    2. NO  : REPAIR circuit 57 (BK). TEST the system for normal operation. For vehicles equipped with seat side air bags, DISCONNECT the battery ground cable. DISCONNECT the Restraint System Diagnostic Tool from passenger seat side air bag module C316. CONNECT passenger seat side air bag module C316. REPOWER the SRS. REFER to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM article.
  3. L3 CHECK CIRCUIT 1048 (LB/WH) FOR VOLTAGE TO THE HEATED SEAT MODULE

    • Measure the voltage between passenger heated seat module C329-12, circuit 1048 (LB/WH), harness side and ground.
    • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? 
    1. YES  : Go to  L4.
    2. NO  : VERIFY the battery junction box (BJB) fuse 16 (20A) is OK. If OK, REPAIR circuit 1048 (LB/WH). TEST the system for normal operation. For vehicles equipped with seat side air bags, DISCONNECT the battery ground cable. DISCONNECT the Restraint System Diagnostic Tool from passenger seat side air bag module C316. CONNECT passenger seat side air bag module C316. REPOWER the SRS. REFER to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM article.
  4. L4 CHECK CIRCUIT 1040 (RD/BK) FOR VOLTAGE TO THE HEATED SEAT MODULE  
    • Key in ON position.

    • Measure the voltage between passenger heated seat module C329-5, circuit 1040 (RD/BK), harness side and ground.
    • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? 
    1. YES  : Go to  L5.
    2. NO  : VERIFY the central junction box (CJB) fuse 17 (10A) is OK. If OK, REPAIR circuit 1040 (RD/BK). TEST the system for normal operation. For vehicles equipped with seat side air bags, DISCONNECT the battery ground cable. DISCONNECT the Restraint System Diagnostic Tool from passenger seat side air bag module C316. CONNECT passenger seat side air bag module C316. REPOWER the SRS. REFER to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM article.
  5. L5 CHECK HEATED SEAT MODULE GROUND CIRCUIT 57 (BK) 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Measure the resistance between passenger heated seat module C329-1, circuit 57 (BK), harness side and ground.
    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
    1. YES  : Go to  L6.
    2. NO  : REPAIR circuit 57 (BK). TEST the system for normal operation. For vehicles equipped with seat side air bags, DISCONNECT the battery ground cable. DISCONNECT the Restraint System Diagnostic Tool from passenger seat side air bag module C316. CONNECT passenger seat side air bag module C316. REPOWER the SRS. REFER to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM article.
  6. L6 CHECK THE SEAT CUSHION HEATER AND THE SEAT BACK HEATER CIRCUITS 
    • Measure the resistance between passenger heated seat module C329-6, circuit 1064 (YE/LB), harness side and C329-7, circuit 1065 (WH/LB), harness side; and between passenger heated seat module C329-6, circuit 1064 (YE/LB), harness side and ground.
    • Is the resistance greater than 1.6 ohms and less than 10 ohms between C329-6 and C329-7 and greater than 10,000 ohms between C329-6 and ground? 
    1. YES  : Go to  L7.
    2. NO  : Go to  L12.
  7. L7 CHECK THE SEAT CUSHION HEATER AND THE SEAT BACK HEATER CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE 
    • Key in ON position.
    • Measure the voltage between passenger heated seat module C329-6, circuit 1064 (YE/LB), harness side and ground and between C329-7, circuit 1065 (WH/LB), harness side and ground.
    • Is voltage present on either circuit? 
    1. YES  : REPAIR the affected circuit. TEST the system for normal operation. For vehicles equipped with seat side air bags, DISCONNECT the battery ground cable. DISCONNECT the Restraint System Diagnostic Tool from passenger seat side air bag module C316. CONNECT passenger seat side air bag module C316. REPOWER the SRS. REFER to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM article.
    2. NO  : Go to  L8.
  8. L8 CHECK THE HEATED SEAT TEMPERATURE SENSOR AND CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE 
    • Measure the voltage between passenger heated seat module C329-3, circuit 1061 (BN/LB), harness side and ground and between C329-4, circuit 1060 (BK/LB), harness side and ground.
    • Is voltage present on either circuit? 
    1. YES  : REPAIR the affected circuit. TEST the system for normal operation. For vehicles equipped with seat side air bags, DISCONNECT the battery ground cable. DISCONNECT the Restraint System Diagnostic Tool from passenger seat side air bag module C316. CONNECT passenger seat side air bag module C316. REPOWER the SRS. REFER to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM article.
    2. NO  : Go to  L9.
  9. L9 CHECK THE HEATED SEAT TEMPERATURE SENSOR AND CIRCUITS 
    • Key in OFF position.

    • Measure the resistance between passenger heated seat module C329-3, circuit 1061 (BN/LB), harness side and C329-4, circuit 1060 (BK/LB), harness side; and between passenger heated seat module C329-3, circuit 1061 (BN/LB), harness side and ground.
    • Is the resistance less than 300,000 ohms and greater than 50 ohms between C329-3 and C329-4 and greater than 10,000 ohms between C329-3 and ground? 
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new passenger heated seat module. REFER to Heated Seat Module . TEST the system for normal operation. For vehicles equipped with seat side air bags, DISCONNECT the battery ground cable. DISCONNECT the Restraint System Diagnostic Tool from passenger seat side air bag module C316. CONNECT passenger seat side air bag module C316. REPOWER the SRS. REFER to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM article.
    2. NO  : Go to  L10.
  10. L10 CHECK CIRCUIT 1061 (BN/LB) FOR AN OPEN OR SHORT TO GROUND 
    • Disconnect: Passenger Seat Cushion Heater C334

    • Measure the resistance between passenger heated seat module C329-3, circuit 1061 (BN/LB), harness side and passenger seat cushion heater C334-2, circuit 1061 (BN/LB), harness side; and between passenger heated seat module C329-3, circuit 1061 (BN/LB), harness side and ground.
    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms between the heated seat module and the seat cushion heater and greater than 10,000 ohms between the heated seat module and ground? 
    1. YES  : Go to  L11.
    2. NO  : REPAIR circuit 1061 (BN/LB). TEST the system for normal operation. For vehicles equipped with seat side air bags, DISCONNECT the battery ground cable. DISCONNECT the Restraint System Diagnostic Tool from passenger seat side air bag module C316. CONNECT passenger seat side air bag module C316. REPOWER the SRS. REFER to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM article.
  11. L11 CHECK CIRCUIT 1060 (BK/LB) FOR AN OPEN OR SHORT TO GROUND

    • Measure the resistance between passenger heated seat module C329-4, circuit 1060 (BK/LB), harness side and passenger seat cushion heater C334-3, circuit 1060 (BK/LB), harness side; and between passenger heated seat module C329-4, circuit 1060 (BK/LB), harness side and ground.
    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms between the heated seat module and the seat cushion heater and greater than 10,000 ohms between the heated seat module and ground? 
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new passenger seat cushion heater. TEST the system for normal operation. For vehicles equipped with seat side air bags, DISCONNECT the battery ground cable. DISCONNECT the Restraint System Diagnostic Tool from passenger seat side air bag module C316. CONNECT passenger seat side air bag module C316. REPOWER the SRS. REFER to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM article.
    2. NO  : REPAIR circuit 1060 (BK/LB). TEST the system for normal operation. For vehicles equipped with seat side air bags, DISCONNECT the battery ground cable. DISCONNECT the Restraint System Diagnostic Tool from passenger seat side air bag module C316. CONNECT passenger seat side air bag module C316. REPOWER the SRS. REFER to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM article.
  12. L12 CHECK CIRCUIT 1064 (YE/LB) FOR AN OPEN OR SHORT TO GROUND 
    • Disconnect: Passenger Seat Cushion Heater C334

    • Measure the resistance between passenger heated seat module C329-6, circuit 1064 (YE/LB), harness side and passenger seat cushion heater C334-4, circuit 1064 (YE/LB), harness side; and between passenger heated seat module C329-6, circuit 1064 (YE/LB), harness side and ground.
    • Is the resistance less than 1 ohm between the heated seat module and the seat cushion heater, and greater than 10,000 ohms between the heated seat module and ground? 
    1. YES  : Go to  L13.
    2. NO  : REPAIR circuit 1064 (YE/LB). TEST the system for normal operation. For vehicles equipped with seat side air bags, DISCONNECT the battery ground cable. DISCONNECT the Restraint System Diagnostic Tool from passenger seat side air bag module C316. CONNECT passenger seat side air bag module C316. REPOWER the SRS. REFER to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM article.
  13. L13 CHECK CIRCUIT 1065 (WH/LB) FOR AN OPEN OR SHORT TO GROUND

    • Measure the resistance between passenger heated seat module C329-7, circuit 1065 (WH/LB), harness side and passenger seat cushion heater C334-1, circuit 1065 (WH/LB), harness side; and between passenger heated seat module C329-7, circuit 1065 (WH/LB), harness side and ground.
    • Is the resistance less than 1 ohm between the heated seat module and the seat cushion heater, and greater than 10,000 ohms between the heated seat module and ground? 
    1. YES  : Go to  L14.
    2. NO  : REPAIR circuit 1065 (WH/LB). TEST the system for normal operation. For vehicles equipped with seat side air bags, DISCONNECT the battery ground cable. DISCONNECT the Restraint System Diagnostic Tool from passenger seat side air bag module C316. CONNECT passenger seat side air bag module C316. REPOWER the SRS. REFER to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM article.
  14. L14 CHECK THE SEAT BACK HEATER 
    • Disconnect: Passenger Seat Back Heater Connector

    • Measure the resistance between passenger seat back heater pin 1 and pin 2, seat back heater component side.
    • Is the resistance between 0.6 and 0.9 ohm? 
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new passenger seat cushion heater. TEST the system for normal operation. For vehicles equipped with seat side air bags, DISCONNECT the battery ground cable. DISCONNECT the Restraint System Diagnostic Tool from passenger seat side air bag module C316. CONNECT passenger seat side air bag module C316. REPOWER the SRS. REFER to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM article.
    2. NO  : INSTALL a new passenger seat back heater. TEST the system for normal operation. For vehicles equipped with seat side air bags, DISCONNECT the battery ground cable. DISCONNECT the Restraint System Diagnostic Tool from passenger seat side air bag module C316. CONNECT passenger seat side air bag module C316. REPOWER the SRS. REFER to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM article.
